Morrisville shooting suspect arrested Sunday night

Morrisville shooting suspect Henry Lovell is expected to be arraigned at 12:30 p.m. today in court in Hyde Park following a three-day manhunt and his Sunday night arrest.

State police say the arrest came at about 6:35 p.m. after the Lamoille County Sheriff’s Department received a tip from a member of the public who saw a man matching Lovell’s physical and clothing description walking along a road in Hyde Park. The location was about one mile from an area where law enforcement had reason to believe Lovell was and had deployed resources in an attempt to locate him.

A Vermont State Police trooper and an officer with the Morristown Police Department were in the immediate vicinity of the roadside location mentioned in the tip. They responded, located Lovell by the side of the road, and took him into custody without incident. The manhunt featured the coordinated work of many state, local and federal police, and saw local schools shut down as a precaution.

Late Friday, April 21, 2023, a Vermont Superior Court judge signed a warrant for Lovell on the following charges:

Lovell, 24, faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Kidnapping, First-degree aggravated domestic assault, First-degree unlawful restraint (two counts), Criminal threatening, and Violation of conditions of release.

Police responded Thursday night to a report of a domestic disturbance and kidnapping. Police say Lovell used a shotgun during a subsequent exchange of gunfire with a Morristown police officer. Afterward, surveillance footage from the nearby Veterans of Foreign Wars post shows that Lovell entered the building carrying the shotgun, at which point a patron wrestled the weapon away, and Lovell fled the building on foot.

VSP identified the Morristown police officer involved in this incident as Brian Tomlinson. He has been an officer with the department since February 2021. Tomlinson was struck by pellets fired from Lovell’s shotgun but did not sustain any penetrative injuries. He was treated for minor injuries and has been released from care.

Per standard protocol following a police-involved shooting, Tomlinson has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation.
