Many people hear “democratic socialism” and assume it’s a fresh, kinder alternative to the failed experiments of the past. The pitch is appealing: more democracy, more equality, none of the gulags or secret police. But socialists themselves have been making that exact claim for more than a century—about societies we now recognize as textbook authoritarian disasters.
American socialist leader Eugene Debs, still celebrated today as a model of democratic socialism, called the early Soviet Union “the first real democracy that ever drew the breath of life in this world.” He said this even after the Bolsheviks dissolved Russia’s democratically elected assembly and seized power. Beatrice Webb, a leading British Fabian socialist, later described Stalin’s USSR as “the most inclusive and equalised democracy in the world” and insisted Stalin was “not a dictator.” Cuban leaders claimed their one-party state was “more democratic than any other state in history”—even without elections. East Germany called itself the German Democratic Republic while building the Berlin Wall to keep people in. The Khmer Rouge’s Democratic Kampuchea promised equality and democracy while killing roughly a fifth of Cambodia’s population.
When the human costs became impossible to ignore—the Holodomor famine, the Great Terror, the gulags, the Killing Fields—the response from later socialists was not “we were wrong about the system.” It was “that was never socialism.” Suddenly the USSR and Cuba were reclassified as “state capitalism.” The pattern is consistent: every new experiment is hailed as the real democratic socialism arriving at last. When repression follows, the label is quietly removed.
The deeper problem is not bad leadership or bad luck. Socialism rests on a compulsory duty—“from each according to their ability”—that treats people’s time and labor as society’s property rather than their own. That power over individuals has repeatedly produced the very authoritarianism socialists later disown. Today’s democratic socialists still affirm the same duty. The “democratic” label does not remove it.
We have already seen multiple versions of democratic socialism. Their results were not democratic. The next round will be sold the same way. History suggests we should treat the sales pitch with the skepticism it has earned.

Precisely correct re “democratic” socialism. DO MORE OF THIS….SPEAK UP everywhere like this, about this…..people need to see this & hear it.
So this fully exposes why they are getting everyone to say we are a democracy.
We are NOT supposed to be a democracy. We are supposed to be a Republic, which defends the rights of the MINORITY>>>.it can be ONE person, the smallest of minorities against the majority.
A republic says, I have the right to my property and fruit of my labor.
A democracy says, We think you ,make to much money and want to give it to other people, so they vote and you lose.
Same goes for property rights, which Vermont is hell bent on taking from owners without compensation, they have done this many times and gotten away with it. We deem your property for the deer; you can’t build a home on it. It’s for the public good.
Marxist/Democratic Socialism is interesting and has infiltrated it’s way into the churches, the schools, universities, it’s part of the subversion process, considered the highest art form of warfare (Sun Tzu, The art of War)….just so you know, it is Chinese in it’s roots.
So our church has just experienced this. We paid for insurance to rebuild our church, we paid salaries for bishop and superintendent for 100+ years, we paid for the building, we paid for the upkeep, we paid our mission shares for over 100 years. We have a fire, we want to rebuild.
They say we are keeping the money, because the greater body needs it more than you. Too bad, so sad, we are ruining your church for the betterment of the “Christian collective”.
This is how it works.
And then they give 270 acres back to someone they like. See how that works?
People who are in the system love it. Our Methodist organization is run like the state of Vermont. MASSIVE amounts of labor/pay for those in management, about 1.9% going back to help the churches spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, to be a functioning church. And the people suffer needlessly just like in Vermont.
So yeah, management love Democratic Socialists, because they vote to keep high pay and their positions. Justice and Fairness is hard to find. Envy is easy.
We are lost. There is but one path, and it’s lead by Jesus Christ, not Karl Marx.
Comes to light again with a new AFL/CIO political commercial, “Elect ‘LEADERS’ that will help working people”. We in our Republic do not have leaders, they are representatives, a function which has been lost to history

the above video should be on any political party within the united states….as it’s really what they are supposed to be, defenders of our constitution. I know well why one side does not, but not the other. Below is a longer video, but very enlightening, more so for those who have been indoctrinated by or entirely insufficient educational system in Vermont. I think you will find it very informative and helpful. I do every time I watch it, perhaps one of the better videos around.
And in case you were wondering, what is subversion? Why does nothing make sense anymore? It’s all part of the plan, well laid out in this grainy video. He also talks of the solution, which I absolutely adore. Enjoy.
Hey Tim, thanks for posting, hope this builds your case. They have educated everyone to think we are a democracy, and that is NOT by accident. It has truly evil intent. Who knew? Sounds so innocent. Just like community organizer…sounds so innocent and helpful….
