A Highgate woman has been cited to appear in court on charges of aggravated assault and cruelty to a child following a months-long investigation into alleged abuse of an infant.

Vermont State Police said Ashleigh Deyo, 23, of Highgate, was cited May 5 to appear in Franklin County Superior Court, Criminal Division, on May 6 at 1 p.m.

The investigation began Jan. 6, when state police, working with the Northwest Unit for Special Investigations, the Department for Children and Families, and the University of Vermont Medical Center, looked into allegations involving a 6-week-old child.

Authorities said investigators determined Deyo endangered the health and well-being of the juvenile, who was in her care at the time of the alleged incident.

No additional details about the child’s condition were released.
