    First: It’s refreshing to see the diversity of this Burlington community, but disappointing to understand their paranoia after ‘hearing’ some gun shots. While the gun shots may, indeed, reflect some deleterious activity, where I live (out in the country) occasional gun shots are of little concern. People, for the 45 years I’ve lived here, often target shoot and sight in their hunting rifles.

    Yes, better safe than sorry. Setting up security cameras and even hiring armed security guards can not be faulted. In fact, I suspect some local citizens will conceal carry more often (no permit required in VT). But does this neighborhood justify a ‘news story’ emphasizing these safety concerns based on what may be normal circumstances?

    If there has been malicious activity in the community justifying the concern, so be it. Again, better safe than sorry. But I hope ‘the news’ isn’t fanning fear just to continue what can fast become a ‘mass formation’ issue.
