VDC to publish DUI’s: here’s why

DUI and (and also domestic abuse) press releases from the Vermont State Police are so common that we (and many other Vermont media) often don’t publish their contents.

When the same crime has been happening almost daily for decades, the news media and readers tend to tune out these news reports as ‘background noise.’ Only when serious injury, death, or some other drastic event happens does a DUI typically merit news coverage.

At VDC, we’ve decided that needs to change. Beginning in Monday’s Police Blotter, VDC will publish the names of people arrested for DUI.

  1. These poor children and their families. May they be at peace with the Lord now & may that peace & love extend to those who love them always. They will all be reunited one day through God.

  2. I would hope to see also in the reporting, where the DUI’s came from, are they VTe’rs or of of staters. The criminals for the most part seem to be out of staters. There should be instant prison time. And if many are killed due to their DUI conviction, death row, regardless of M or F. Teeth in the criminal system will deter such activity. In Arab countries, if a person stole (being a minor offense) they lost their hands. The justice system needs people that care more for the criminal than the victim. If VT wanted to become a beacon for such justice then start. The highways are dangerous enough without drunkards. Thanks VDC.

    • Sorry about the typo—should read “The justice system doesn’t need people that care more for the criminal than the victim” One hand typing and the other holding first cup of Joe and the mind isn’t fully functional yet.

  3. I remember years ago in NH the Manchester Union Leader would publish any and all police activities, regardless of how minor. I don’t know if they still do. William and Nancy Loeb were the publisher, very conservative. Both have died, William in 1981. Reported they were friends of Teddy Roosevelt and William always carried a gun. A search is interesting, they were something.

  4. I look at Far Side Daily Dose first thing every day and then the Vermont State Police Blog. It appears that, after looking at this for over ten years, I’m seeing either the same people or their children being arrested. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and neither do nuts.

  5. And then we have Eva Vekos, the Addison County D.A, who was caught in a DUI. What an example she will be setting. When she goes through her treatment, her record will be wiped clean and she will keep her job which involves punishing offenders, well, if we can call it that. We need to treat DUI like they do in Europe which is severe.

  6. Like with the new policy of publishing DUI arrests, it would be nice to know the official causes of what seem to be a lot of fires in multi-unit dwellings lately. Malfunctioning electrical devices, especially involving battery chargers are typically considered “accidental” even though the dangers of some battery types and chargers are becoming well known now. However, when the cause of the fires is improper or irresponsible use candles, incense or especially smoking materials, that is edging into the area of negligence, and would be nice to have more reporting on. Anyone who shares an apartment situation, either as roommate or neighbor with a smoker, especially one who also engages in the use of debilitating drugs like alcohol or opioids is at risk and it would be nice to know the statistics. I would like to assume that once an official cause of a dwelling fire is made, either by public servants or by insurance companies, that it would be public information. A drunken smoker can kill passing out on his couch just as easily as behind the wheel. Maybe it’s time to start holding those who start fires that harm others criminally responsible the same we do with drunken drivers?
