Swanton teen dies on highway

Kyle Benway, 17, of Swanton died early this morning, hours after he was ejected from his Jeep Cherokee in a crash on Rte. 78 in Highgate.

Just before 1 AM, state troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash near Raven Drive on Route 78 in the Town of Highgate. The 1999 SUV left the traveled portion of the road, overturned, and Benway – who was not wearing a seat belt – was ejected in the process. Benway was transported to the UVM Medical Center, but later died from his injuries sustained during the crash.

The weather was clear. The crash remains under investigation, and anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the Vermont State Police in Saint Albans at 802-524-5993.

  1. Very sad. I was in Highgate four days ago at mid-day – several vehicles including ATVs and motorbikes were travelling carelessly and at high speeds right through the town center. Ridiculous.

  2. Even if it doesn’t save your life it will keep you in the drivers seat where you have a chance to regain control. I speak from experience. I am very fortunate to still be here. Buckle up every time!
