A suspicious package, reportedly with the word “Bomb” on it, forced the shutdown of the U.S. Post Office in Northfield on Saturday morning, Vermont News First has been told.

The Vermont State Police Bomb squad was called in to help deal with the package inside the federal building on South Main Street next door to Four Seasons Home Care.

Vermont State Police Lt. T.J. Howard confirmed three bomb technicians helped secure the package, X-rayed it and eventually opened it. There was no cause for concern, he said.

U.S. Postal Inspectors also were alerted and will follow up on the case, Howard told Vermont News First.

The incident started about 8:20 a.m. and the scene was cleared about 11:30 a.m.

Northfield Police, Northfield Ambulance and Northfield Fire Department also were on the scene.

It was a busy day in Northfield as Saturday marked the arrival day for the new first-year members of the Corps of Cadets (“rooks”) at nearby Norwich University, the nation’s oldest private military college in the nation, between 8 a.m. and noon.
