Scott leads Janoo in governor’s race – but ability to veto in doubt
By Guy Page
With less than half of the towns in their districts reporting, three Republican senators of counties that went ‘red’ in 2024 are trailing their Democrat opponents.
Addison County’s Steve Heffernan, John Benson of Orange County, and Pat Brennan of Grand Isle – Colchester all are well behind. Ashley Bartley, running for the seat held by Republican Chris Mattos, is trailing Democrat Irene Wrenner. Also, indepedent and former Democrat Sen. David Wolk is poised to pick up a seat from incumbent Terry Williams, a Republican.
The Republicans currently hold 13 seats. If they lose three, they will be down to 10 seats and will not be able to sustain a veto by Gov. Phil Scott if the other 20 senators vote to override.
Gov. Phil Scott leads Democrat opponent Amanda Janoo 56% – 42%. South Burlington, Burlington and Shelburne have not reported yet. Molly Gray leads Republican incumbent John Rodgers by double digits in the lieutenant governor’s race.
All results may be seen on FYIVT.com.
VDC has not had time to thoroughly count the House races. However, many of the first-year 2004 Red Wave Republicans were voted out, and the 51 votes needed to uphold the governor’s veto is in serious jeopardy.

Let’s be clear headed and take the long view here. Any hopes at reform of the Property Tax system, Education Funding & overspending, and the much HATED Tiers which are Statewide Zoning and property rights THEFT died last night!
So what next? Wring our hands and lament; list our homes on a real estate agent, plan the move? To where? Texas?
Here is my proposal. Take these important and existential issues to the Towns, the streets and the Legislature be damned! Town by town we should stage a PROPERTY TAX AND ED FUND REVOLT. At what is left of Town Meetings elect selectboard members who will defend property and municipal control of schools and property taxes. Refuse to send the money in and refuse to assist in the collection and assessment if the Statewide Property tax Ed Funding, refuse to acknowledge the Tiers and rhe statutory State Zoning therein, Vote (even symbolically) to secede from Vermont and DEFINITELY VOTE TO WITHDRAW from Regional Planning systems who are the agents of the State who will enforce the Tier maps.
Speak to others in your Town and attend the next selectboard meeting and ask to speak and ask questions during the mandated “other business” item on their agenda. Find out what your legislator plans to support by demanding they come to a future meeting and answer you!
Revolution is about property and control of the levers of Liberty (Malcolm X paraphrase).
If your government refuses you liberty it has lost legitemacy…
