Editor’s note: GOP House candidate Rebecca Pitre was verbally abused while campaigning in Cambridge August 27
by George Putnam
I spent yesterday morning at the Cambridge transfer station with Rebecca and her campaign for Vermont State Representative. It was her first time back at the transfer station since the incident on August 27th. Many people stopped by her table to say that they support her candidacy, and that they are glad she has returned to campaign at the transfer station.
I met a man from Fletcher who moved to Vermont in 2019. Being from Fletcher, he can’t vote for Rebecca, but he has been watching this election. We visited a long time. He seemed intelligent and reasonable, with considerable life experience about people. His observation was that some people are suffering from “Pitre Derangement Syndrome.” Oh my, I had to laugh!
That phrase brings to mind Donald Trump, of course, because of this reference. And, sure enough, I recall that there was a recent letter to the editor in the News & Citizen that likened Rebecca Pitre to Donald Trump. If people are voting against Rebecca because they think she is like Donald Trump, they are deeply misinformed. I have gotten to know Rebecca over the last five months, and I can assure you that she is nothing like Donald Trump.
As I wrote in Supporting Rebecca Pitre:
I find that Rebecca brings common sense, compassion, wisdom, and perspective born of life experience to whatever she does. She is a good listener and a good thinker. She will be a valuable and effective representative in Montpelier for the people of Waterville and Cambridge.
I will add that I find Rebecca to be curious, courageous, and caring. She cares deeply about issues that affect local residents. For example, see her recent posts in Front Porch Forum about the opioid crisis (10/26) and energy issues (10/28). See Rebecca Pitre’s website where she has been posting about local issues since she announced her candidacy in May, most recently about the housing crisis.
To my fellow citizens in Cambridge and Waterville:
Go ahead and vote for the Democratic candidate if you wish. That is your right, and Lucy Boyden is a good person. For myself, I believe that the Democratic Party in Vermont has too much power, and that they use that power to pursue bad policies. Just one example is the Global Warming Solutions Act which the legislature enacted over the governor’s veto, as I wrote about in Front Porch Forum on 10/20.
I am voting for the Republican/Libertarian candidate, Rebecca Pitre.

Rebecca is great! I spoke with her at the transfer station as well. She will make a fantastic state rep. God Bless her for her courage, perseverance, integrity and wisdom. I cant believe the alternative is a 22 year old candidate! What was your mindset when you were 22? Crazy.
And SO WHAT if this Vermont citizen & candidate WAS or IS like Donald Trump?? The writer “defends” this candidate from this purported “accusation” as opposed to emphasizing that in this USA, everyone has the RIGHT to support whoever they like and that ANY and ALL scrutiny should be against the perpetrator in the past who aggressively attacked Ms. Pitre and her husband – and NOT whether she is like or unlike anyone else; nonetheless a former President of the USA.
The current democrat “socialist” party certainly has no grounding to throw stones – THEY are the party of censorship, of same-sex bathrooms, locker rooms & athletic teams in schools, of being impediments to free speech, of handing out condoms to 12 year old’s in schools, to advocating for sex change surgeries without parental notifications, for permitting abortions at any stage of gestation for any “cause”, seeking to allow children and non-citizens to vote, looking to legalize prostitution, etc. – yet Vermonters BUY in to their utter lunacy that a particular candidate affiliated with the republican party is somehow “similar” to a former US President who happened to have been one of the most beloved of Presidents of recent years?
“Progressive” extremist democrat socialists in Vermont and across the nation loathe President Trump because he CHALLENGES the D.C. swamp, status quo, and immeasurable CORRUPTION that has become politics in this nation. They fear him. In turn? These politicos are the ones to be feared.
Most of the democrats who will remain in the VT legislature after January possess ideologies which are contradictory to the US and VT Constitutions. Meanwhile their brainwashed constituents are encouraged and manipulated into “worrying” about former President Trump “lurking” around every corner or within any candidate who seeks to return the proper checks & balances to Montpelier so every citizen has a part in governing this state – NOT just two-thirds.
And since today is Halloween after all….BOO! Trump and Trump’s legacy remains throughout the USA right out in the open today and every day and shall for a long, long time. And unless and until Vermonters engage in INDEPENDENT THOUGHT again in this state soon – the big, bad boogieman you’ve been taught to fear in the form of Trump – shall very soon be the State of Communist Vermont. Now that’s what is truly scary as we celebrate Halloween.
Excellent comment, Kathleen! We have a state of weenie voters, uninformed idiots and virtue signaling morons and unfortunately they are the majority. However, the republican party here is the real weenie, they refuse to take on the insanity and continue to support RINOs as in our socialist governor. He throws out a few vetoes and makes a few statements but does nothing for the advancement of the party or candidates. It is so depressing living here that I’m on the verge of moving across the river where some sanity is reawakening. Thank you for your words.
Thanks. We’re considering the very same – especially in two more years when we shall inevitably witness an unadulterated Communist be anointed as the governor here. There MUST truly be a veil of evil beclouds the hills of VT – as reason and sanity and all that was once good becomes almost nowhere to be found here anymore. We have much invested as do many, but to no longer be able to live free is truly a life not worth living – and something genuinely dark permeates “little Vermont” now – towns and cities which were at one time dotted with Christian and especially Catholic Christian churches & shrines – now being closed and destroyed as hedonism and amorality take its place.
Yes, in the end – God surely wins. And yes, I also suppose He placed us to live in this era and to fight against the godlessness that currently prevails with all that is in us. But I remain unconvinced that we cannot accomplish the same from one state over if necessary. Not as pretty, not as quaint, but thus far at least, slightly more sane.
I think George Putnam suffers from (TDS) Trump Derangement Syndrome. Rather than supporting Candidate Rebecca Pitre by laying out her good qualities and the reasons she should be elected, he chooses to distort President Trump’s record and use him as a tool for his distorted comparison.
It seems TDS is especially a correct assessment for Mr. Putnam, because the very qualities he lays out as being contrary to President Trump are indeed very evident and ongoing in President Trump. Such as: “common sense, compassion, wisdom, perspective born of life experience, a good listener and a good thinker, curious, courageous, and caring.”
No human being is perfect, but President Trump stood out for his genuine love of “The People” and ALL the actions he took to serve “The People” unlike any other US President in the last 50 years.
Please take a long hard look in the mirror Mr. Putnam. You are definitely suffering from TDS much like many in the Vermont State GOP Leadership. We elect a president to uphold our Constitution and Laws and serve “The People’ of the Country. Why do you loath a hard working man who more than fulfilled his Duty?
Another excellent comment for the faint at heart. What Trump did in 4 years for America was outstanding, especially while he was constantly under attack by the deep state swamp. I’m looking forward to his revenge term now that he knows who and where the back stabbers are he can really damage the destroyers of America and they knew it. Why would they continue to attack him if they weren’t worried what we can find out if the scab is torn off the dem/prog cult. What ever they accuse Trump of doing, you know they have already done it. It’s called projection, projecting on to their opponent what are doing to hide it.
By the way – yet ANOTHER shout out to the “leader” of the Vermont GOP PAUL DAME: Let’s Go Brandon”!!!!!!!!!!!! Not nice to say, Paul? We seem to all find it a LOT nicer than boys stalking girls in their locker rooms and repeated violations to the US & Vermont Constitutions perpetrated by democrats in this state all the time.
