New bills target police immunity and pregnancy center advertising, repeal retail cannabis

House bills introduced on February 14 would:

  • Eliminate penalties for underage tobacco use and possession.

H.253 would “eliminate prohibitions on and penalties for the purchase, use, and possession of tobacco products in Vermont. It would also update and align tobacco-related terminology and make similar and conforming revisions in relevant statutes.”

The bill was sponsored by Representative Tristan Roberts (D-Halifax) and referred to the House Committee on Human Services.

  • Make law enforcement liable while policing rioters.

H.249 would “remove immunity and subject law enforcement officers and those acting at the request or direction of an officer to civil or criminal liability if they do not abide by the standards for law enforcement use of force in dispersing or apprehending rioters. This bill also defines ‘officer’ for clarity.”

The bill was sponsored by Representative Martin LaLonde (D-South Burlington) and referred to the House Judiciary Committee.

  • Restrict the advertising of crisis pregnancy centers.

H.254 would “prohibit crisis pregnancy centers (CPC) from disseminating any advertising about the services or proposed services at the center if the management of the center knows or, by the exercise of reasonable care, ought to know it is untrue or clearly designed to mislead the public about the nature of services provided or delay time-sensitive medical care or both. This bill will ensure consumers are aware of whether the CPCs are licensed medical facilities and what services actually provided, as well as protect consumer privacy and data. A violation would be considered an unfair or deceptive act or practice in commerce and subject to the enforcement actions authorized for such under current law.”

The bill was sponsored by Representative Emma Mulvaney-Stanak (P/D-Burlington) and referred to the House Committee on Health Care. A similar bill has been introduced into the Senate.

  • Repeal regulated cannabis and establish the drug’s harms and dangers.

H.257 would “establish findings about the harmful effects of cannabis on the health and safety of Vermonters and the environment and the dangers cannabis use presents in the context of employment, operation of a motor vehicle, and youth substance misuse. The bill also repeals all laws concerning the regulation of licensed cannabis establishments.”

The bill was sponsored by Representative Arthur Peterson (R-Clarendon) and referred to the House Committee on Government Operations and Military Affairs.

  1. lalonde doesn’t “chip” away at police immunity, his H.249 takes a club to the legs of any peace officer during a “riot”, rendering the peace officer subject to disciplinary action, lawsuits, criminal charges and more- lalonde even fails to define riot, leaving the risk of loss of immunity up to such unbiased folks as sarah george and wokesters seeking a buck, along with their equally woke lawyers.
Mr. lalonde’s bill is but another reason to not consider policing in Vermont as a career.

  2. The majority of voters in Chittenden County who maintain Martin LaLonde and Emma Mulvaney-Stanak in office should undergo psychiatric evaluations. Also, the legislative counsel for the Vermont Legislature sure have “crafty” ways of wording absolutely insane proposals to make them sound palatable to the ignorant electorate. Demanding that peace officers maintain reasonable use-of-force standards in all their professional actions is a benchmark of a decent society, but to strip them of their indemnity protections SPECIFICALLY DURING A “RIOT” is ludicrous. It’s a RIOT, where by definition the participants are acting outside the law. You would at least think that LaLonde would use one of those hypocritical buzzphrases like “mostly peaceful protests”, like his fawning media utilizes when referring to leftist “unrest”, the only kind of rioting we experience in Vermont. Mulvaney-Stanak’s proposal to specifically infringe on Constitutional Rights of Free Expression using the sleazy marxist tactic of defining “misinformation” in order to silence political opponents is nothing less than shameful. There are all kinds of questionable medical “treatments” advertised regularly making claims about curing all ills and no one is holding them to account for their claims, but if the “illness” is an unwanted pregnancy, these information centers are being unjustly targeted by the Vermont abortion mafia. Just when you think that the Vermont Legislature has hit the lowest depths of depravity, they always manage to scrape a little more off the bottom. People who VOTED for these Representatives who shovel this garbage should hang their heads in shame.

  3. Neighbors. just a heads up: From our heritage we have some filters we’re supposed to be using to look at legislation like this. Has a consensus been generated among us to warrant making it a law? …and how much is it intruding on our “pursuit of happiness” liberty?

  4. It is absolutely insane that they introduce over 200 bills and expect them to get any kind of discussion by law makers. We need to go to Montpelier legislators only meeting every other year. They should also follow NH and see what they pay their House and Senate( look it up). Limit the time from January till March. That way they would stop the frivolous bills from being introduced and get down to making VT a more affordable place to live.

  5. Great idea, re-criminalize pot so that the only place people will be able to get it (other than growing your own) will be through black market dealers or by going to bordering states. Reefer madness strikes again!

  6. The majority of voters in Vermont have handed these clowns a veto-proof majority in both chambers so how can we blame them for airing their complete wish list of marxist utopian bills? The moonbats are in a virtue-signaling contest to see who can propose the most outrageous laws.

  7. So Lalonde and his ilk are worried about what the police officers will do during a riot….., but not worried about holding rioters accountable?

    Brilliant

    • To LaLonde and his ilk, “rioters” are engaged in the legitimate expression of grievance for civil rights violations so their actions are justified no matter how many buildings or police cars are burned or bystanders harmed.
