Letter: Why I left Vermont

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

by Tom Licata

Tom Licata

I sold my Burlington house last month and moved to Florida. The vast majority of Burlington’s and Vermont’s citizenry deserve what they are getting, either through their voting habits or apathy or (mostly) willful share ofignorance and stupidity.

And of course we can’t forget Vermont’s vast Leftist indoctrination machinery via its media (think WCAX, Seven Days, VT Digger, VPR, etc.) outlets and the Leftist control of its education system and Vermont’s Leftist vast bureaucracy.

And… it will get worse.

I summarize this very sick ‘progressive’ onslaught that has been going on in Vermont for some three decades now as ‘the three Ds’: Division, Destruction, and Deception.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the great author and Soviet dissident was once asked how millions were murdered and tortured during the socialist and communist reign in the USSR; and-paraphrasing-he answered that ‘man had forgotten God’.

My parting message to Vermont via my 2022 House campaign:

  1. When someone flees, they help the opposition win. By withdrawing you aid them. Those who care will stay and fight.

    • Timothy, I understand the desire to want to continue the fight. But I’m very sympathetic to Tom. After watching the train wreck in Vermont for the last 30 years and realizing that it likely will never get better, I understand the desire to move to a better place. Sometimes you just need to know when to fold them.

  2. Not sure about the message but willing to bet the woman hitching a ride did not have long to wait for someone to pull over………

  3. I agree with you, Tom. I will be joining you. I have now been unemployed for two years. There is no meaningful employment for business professionals. The state makes no attempt to attract employers, and the telecommuting work has dried up due to the complexity of state requirements and excessive taxation. I applied for 3 jobs, got one interview and got a job as an assistant to a marketing director and grant writer in my new hone state. I have spent 7 years fighting progressive politics with no avail. DEI, social justice and a global-progressive agenda run through all level of government in Vermont. I am moving on to greener pastures where opportunity if plentiful.

  4. Thank you for having the courage to say it like it is. People have fallen away from God.THAT is the heart of the problem.

  5. Not sure what it will take or how bad things need to get before people realize
the level of damage happening in Vermont’s economic front. The cost of education is staggering with no relief in sight. Hard to believe it costs $30,000 a year to educate a child and yet the results are dismal. The NEA, VEA and all other leaders in that area
need to be educated on what it should cost. Private schools are doing a superior job for half the cost of what public education is costing us…. how is this even possible? We have allowed the education lobby to kill the economy while at the same time deliver us an inferior product. Our children are our future not just someone’s paycheck. I will miss Tom Licatas voice of reason.

  6. Yet another symptom of a dying State. We better double down on all the failing policies, reckless spending, smothering regulation, and governance by emotion. Stat!!!

  7. I understand. The ground solar in our face may be the last straw for me too. Section 248 allows the PUC to give so-called ‘Certificates of Public Good’ to disallow local or abutting rights to fight this crap. All rights to solar and power companies. So now our beautiful rural home has a NYC AirBNB neighbor’s solar stealing our peace. I swallow hard every day right outside our kitchen sink and livingroom windows. Liberalism is a mental disorder, and Vermont is not even similar to the days I was at UVM 1980-84. Tragic.
