Letter: Why I left Vermont

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

by Tom Licata

Tom Licata

I sold my Burlington house last month and moved to Florida. The vast majority of Burlington’s and Vermont’s citizenry deserve what they are getting, either through their voting habits or apathy or (mostly) willful share ofignorance and stupidity.

And of course we can’t forget Vermont’s vast Leftist indoctrination machinery via its media (think WCAX, Seven Days, VT Digger, VPR, etc.) outlets and the Leftist control of its education system and Vermont’s Leftist vast bureaucracy.

And… it will get worse.

I summarize this very sick ‘progressive’ onslaught that has been going on in Vermont for some three decades now as ‘the three Ds’: Division, Destruction, and Deception.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the great author and Soviet dissident was once asked how millions were murdered and tortured during the socialist and communist reign in the USSR; and-paraphrasing-he answered that ‘man had forgotten God’.

My parting message to Vermont via my 2022 House campaign:

  1. When someone flees, they help the opposition win. By withdrawing you aid them. Those who care will stay and fight.

    • Timothy, I understand the desire to want to continue the fight. But I’m very sympathetic to Tom. After watching the train wreck in Vermont for the last 30 years and realizing that it likely will never get better, I understand the desire to move to a better place. Sometimes you just need to know when to fold them.

    • Both sides have merit. I ask this, would you let our state be over taken by an outside political force, that is also working to take over every other state in the union? You see its everywhere. Those in Vermont, yourself included have been trained and experienced on the front lines. You and others like you are invaluable foot soldiers.

To win in Vermont would crack the code for all of America. God did not inform people to leave Vermont, and if there was one person in lot who loved God, it would have been spared. There are many. The foe is formidable, but the Devil and Karl Marx are both losers.

Jesus has already won, we only need to stand and call upon him.

Yeah, it’s real, for sure. Don’t be under the illusion you are safe, none of us are.

May we be he first to also change our course, I ask in my Lord and Saviors name, Jesus Christ. Amen.

  2. Not sure about the message but willing to bet the woman hitching a ride did not have long to wait for someone to pull over………

  3. I agree with you, Tom. I will be joining you. I have now been unemployed for two years. There is no meaningful employment for business professionals. The state makes no attempt to attract employers, and the telecommuting work has dried up due to the complexity of state requirements and excessive taxation. I applied for 3 jobs, got one interview and got a job as an assistant to a marketing director and grant writer in my new hone state. I have spent 7 years fighting progressive politics with no avail. DEI, social justice and a global-progressive agenda run through all level of government in Vermont. I am moving on to greener pastures where opportunity if plentiful.

  4. Thank you, Tom Licata, for your courage in your 2022 campaign by putting the choice before people in black and white: communism or liberty. Choose whom you will serve: the One true God, Jesus the eternal, benevolent, and just Lord and King, or worldly temporary government. Government cannot save you. Only Jesus can save. We can only escape worldly oppression temporarily. Only Jesus can save us from eternal oppression. Our kingdom is not of this world.

  5. Thank you for having the courage to say it like it is. People have fallen away from God.THAT is the heart of the problem.

  6. Not sure what it will take or how bad things need to get before people realize
the level of damage happening in Vermont’s economic front. The cost of education is staggering with no relief in sight. Hard to believe it costs $30,000 a year to educate a child and yet the results are dismal. The NEA, VEA and all other leaders in that area
need to be educated on what it should cost. Private schools are doing a superior job for half the cost of what public education is costing us…. how is this even possible? We have allowed the education lobby to kill the economy while at the same time deliver us an inferior product. Our children are our future not just someone’s paycheck. I will miss Tom Licatas voice of reason.

  7. Yet another symptom of a dying State. We better double down on all the failing policies, reckless spending, smothering regulation, and governance by emotion. Stat!!!

    • Vermont lawmakers want to be just like NY and California, with this looks like they have accomplished their goal ! Next will it be the mandatory low rolling resistance tires to get your car to pass State Inspection?

  8. Good Luck Tom. Enjoy Florida. You did what was right for you and your family.

  9. Vermont’s greatest export…citizenry who has had enough of leftist governance !

  10. I understand. The ground solar in our face may be the last straw for me too. Section 248 allows the PUC to give so-called ‘Certificates of Public Good’ to disallow local or abutting rights to fight this crap. All rights to solar and power companies. So now our beautiful rural home has a NYC AirBNB neighbor’s solar stealing our peace. I swallow hard every day right outside our kitchen sink and livingroom windows. Liberalism is a mental disorder, and Vermont is not even similar to the days I was at UVM 1980-84. Tragic.

    • NIMBY – a common phrase describing the opposition by residents to real estate and infrastructure developments in their local area, as well as support for strict land use regulations. It carries the connotation that such residents are only opposing the development because it is close to them and that they would tolerate or support it if it were built farther away. The residents are often called nimbys, and their viewpoint is called nimbyism.

  11. Many old people in Florida need medical care and the wife should do ok. Vermont can not afford to have doctors leaving this state. Comment from Richard Day.

  12. Tom, I hope you will still read VDC and contribute your valuable insights to our online community.

And each of us must do in faith what we believe is the right thing to do. The beauty of the liberty we have in the kingdom of God and in our constitutional republic of the USA is that no one can or ought to dictate that for us, but our own conscience. What may be right for one person on a matter such as this does not necessarily mean it is right for another. Anyone who tells you otherwise or judges you for your decision as if he is the final arbiter doesn’t fully understand that liberty God has granted us.

Although Romans 14 uses the examples of foods and holidays as an example, I believe the overarching principle Paul is addressing here is about freedom of conscience before God for decisions we make in faith.

“Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭14‬:‭4‬ ‭NASB

“The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves.”
    ‭‭Romans‬ ‭14‬:‭22‬ ‭NASB

God bless you in this new season of your life!

  13. Tom- thank you so much for all your hard work in VT for so long. You will be greatly missed. I hope Florida is wonderful and cheaper and relaxing. Keep all of us here in VT in your prayers. We are certainly trying to reclaim VT. Blessings and gratitude

  14. While going through some old emails, I came across the following. Titled “Vision for Vtgrassroots.com”, it was sent out on 12/17/23 by Ellie Martin:

“The vision the Lord God gave us for forming Vt. Grassroots was to expose the deceit found within the leadership of our government. To promote truth in Government and provide an opportunity for like-minded people to join together to promote our common goals as a nation under God.

“The group Vermont Grassroots is about gathering like-minded people who stand strong for our country as our forefathers put forth.

“We believe in supporting our Constitutional rights as a free people to choose our own destinies and follow our dreams.

“We support, when necessary, pushing back on government intervention in our lives, especially when it comes to health care, faith, and education.

“As US Citizens, we believe FREEDOM made America the leader of the free world and will keep it so, as long as we stand strong against government leaders who wish to take control of our lives.

“We-the-People oppose all authoritarian Marxist manifestations, and maintain our God given sovereign liberties.

    “Our Mission

“To create an awareness of movements that threaten to alter the fabric of our state and country as founded in the Constitution of the United States of America and as one nation under God.”

  15. No sympathy for Tom here.
Looks like the home he and his wife purchased for $250K in 1995 just sold for over a million dollars!!
Things must not be that bad in the BTV area for him to pull in such a sizable return on investment.

Enjoy that cash profit down in The Villages, no need for further updates or suggestions.

  16. The US is very socialist! Insurance is a socialist mechanism. Taxes are a socialist mechanism. All of our wars of choice are a socialist mechanism for the Military-Industrial Complex. Vaccine mandates and the government stockpiling drugs for various reasons, that’s a socialist mechanism for Big Pharma. I just watched an interview with financial expert Catherine Austin Fitts this morning, in which she characterizes our economy as “Soviet.”

Mr. Licata thinks he’s going to escape it?! Get a clue!

    • Drinkin booze and thinkin you’re gonna own the libs.

Yup, you’ll fit right in with the flock at The Villages.
