‘Vermont’s mail-in ballots appear uniform at first glance. Yet scanning the Data Matrix code on the face of a ballot reveals a longer identifier that differs from ballot to ballot. These codes are reportedly absent from ballots issued in person.
Whether the identifiers can connect a completed ballot to its voter remains unproven. Their presence, alongside another code on the mailing envelope, raises questions that deserve documented answers.
How can officials assure us that these ballots comply with uniformity and secrecy requirements without accounting for the individual identifiers and demonstrating that they cannot be used to trace a vote? They can’t.’

So if I deface the data matrix stamp and drop off my ballot will it invalidate my ballot? Because it defaced a “Voter ID”? But we don’t require “voter ID” right?
Thanks for asking these important questions.
Hammer on this Hard, Guy. and lets see where it goes?
In a small town where people know each other, the person who opens the ballot envelope probably knows or has a good idea on how the sender votes. It’s not inconceivable that some mailed-in ballots get deposited in the compost. If you want anonymity, thank goodness we still have the option of voting in-person where you yourself put the paper in the box or feed it to the machine.
