A West Rutland man was killed early Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene, according to Vermont State Police.
Troopers from the Rutland Barracks were called to Main Street near Whipple Hollow Road at about 5:25 AM after receiving a report of a deceased man lying in the grass along the north side of the roadway.
Police identified the victim as Devin Pierro, 30, of West Rutland. Investigators determined that Pierro had been walking west on Main Street when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver failed to stop and has not yet been identified.
Pierro was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington.
The investigation indicates the suspect vehicle sustained damage to the passenger-side headlight area, but police said the vehicle’s make, model and operator remain unknown.
The crash occurred during rainy weather on wet roadways.
