Child dies when SUV strikes I-89 rocky ledge

A child, as yet unidentified, died when an SUV driven by an Essex woman struck a ledge along I-89 in Sharon Thursday.

At 3:22 PM on November 17, state police were dispatched to the report of a single car crash on Interstate 89 south near mile marker 11 in Sharon. The driver of the 2017 Chevy Suburban was identified as Dawn Baustert (45) of Essex. A juvenile passenger sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene.

Police say Baustert was traveling south on Interstate 89 and drifted off the passing lane shoulder into rock ledges. The impact against the rock ledges was primarily taken by the driver’s side.

The driver suffered incapacitating injuries. Passenger Timothy Baustert (56) suffered minor injuries. They were treated at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The vehicle sustained complete damage. Road conditions were dry and weather was clear.

State police were assisted by White River Valley Ambulance, Hartford Fire Department, Northern EMS, and the Vermont Medical Examiner’s Office. The Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was actively investigating as of yesterday evening.

  1. I see so much more lane drifting than I used to. If it’s cell phones or dashboard tablets, they’re worse than drunk driving. Otherwise it’s weed or neurological damage from the shots, but it’s REALLY notable, and it became so sometime during the past few years.

  2. My heart goes out to the family members who are grieving the loss of this young child. Keeping them all in my thoughts and prayers.
