A 60-year-old Newfane man is facing a fourth DUI charge and several other offenses after Vermont State Police say he crashed an ATV while carrying a 4-year-old passenger, injuring both of them.

State police responded at about 6:12 PM Saturday, Aug. 22, to an ATV crash near Loop Road in Newfane. Investigators said Paul B. Mason, 60, of Newfane was operating the ATV when it crashed, causing injuries to Mason and the 4-year-old child riding with him.

Police said troopers observed signs of impairment while investigating the crash. Mason was arrested and transported to the Westminster Barracks for processing.

Mason was charged with fourth-offense DUI, reckless endangerment, negligent operation and cruelty to a child. He was released on conditions and cited to appear Monday, Aug. 24, in Windham Superior Court Criminal Division.

Stolen railroad property – In a separate case, St. Johnsbury police arrested a 48-year-old man after investigators said he possessed and attempted to sell thousands of dollars worth of property stolen from Vermont Rail Systems.

Police said officers responded Aug. 20 to 292 Bay St. for a reported theft and determined that Agustin Rivera Rosado, 48, of St. Johnsbury had sold multiple stolen items valued at a total of $5,300.

Later that day, officers encountered Rivera Rosado with a shopping cart containing multiple cut sections of metal pipe, police said. Investigators subsequently determined the metal, valued at about $1,700, also had been stolen from Vermont Rail Systems.

Police said Rivera Rosado attempted to sell the metal in Lyndon before he was arrested. He faces two felony counts of possession of stolen property and two counts of providing false information to a police officer.

Rivera Rosado was held on $5,000 bail at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility pending an Aug. 24 court appearance in Caledonia County.

Child cruelty – Meanwhile, Vermont State Police have cited an Elmore woman on a child cruelty charge following an investigation that began earlier this month.

Troopers began investigating allegations of child abuse involving Chelsea M. Otis, 39, of Elmore on Aug. 9. State police said their investigation determined that during a single incident, Otis endangered the well-being of a juvenile in her care.

Otis was cited for cruelty to a child by a person over age 16 and ordered to appear Aug. 24 in Lamoille Superior Court Criminal Division.
