A 46-year-old vagrant was jailed on $25,000 bail after police say he fled on foot from a stolen vehicle during a traffic stop Tuesday.

Joseph Greenwood, listed by police as homeless, was arrested for Aggravated Operation without Owners Consent, Possession of Stolen Property (x2), Violation of Conditions of Release (x3), Attempting to Elude, and Resisting Arrest. 

The Lyndonville Police Department said it received a complaint Aug. 25 about a suspicious 2008 Honda Civic with two occupants parked at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lyndonville. An officer responding to the complaint checked the license plate and learned it had been reported stolen.

Police said the Civic left the parking lot as the officer arrived. The officer stopped the vehicle on High Street near 199 Depot Street and conducted a high-risk traffic stop.

The driver, Joseph Greenwood, 46, initially complied but then fled on foot, police said. He was taken into custody in a nearby bank parking lot.

Further checks showed that the license plate was associated with a stolen Lexus and that the Honda Civic itself also had been reported stolen, police said.

A female passenger fled on foot after Greenwood ran, according to police.

Greenwood was taken to the Lyndonville Police Department and later lodged at the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 cash or surety bail. He was scheduled for arraignment at 12:30 PM Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Two Massachusetts fugitives arrested in Derby — Two people with no fixed address were arrested after Vermont State Police troopers recognized them as fugitives wanted in Massachusetts.

Police said troopers on patrol in Derby spotted Zachary Scott, 23, and Taylor Giordani, 27, and knew they were subjects of extraditable Massachusetts warrants.

Checks confirmed that both had active warrants originating with the Norwood, Massachusetts Police Department for alleged vehicle larceny, felony conspiracy, vandalism and burglary.

Scott and Giordani were arrested without incident and taken to the Vermont State Police Derby Barracks for processing.

Both were ordered held on $25,000 bail and were scheduled to appear at 12:30 PM Wednesday, Aug. 26, in Orleans Superior Court, Criminal Division, on charges of arrest prior to requisition, also known as fugitive from justice.

Richford man cited for burglary — A 41-year-old Richford man has been cited on a burglary charge following an investigation into a break-in on Green Avenue.

Vermont State Police said they were notified at about 4:49 PM Sunday, Aug. 23, of a burglary at a property in Richford.

Investigators determined that Craig Fuller, 41, allegedly entered a building where he was not licensed or privileged to be and committed petit larceny.

Troopers located Fuller at about 6 PM Tuesday, Aug. 25. He was cited to appear at 8 AM Sept. 29 in Franklin County Superior Court to answer to a burglary charge.
