Citation follows talks with Chittenden State’s Attorney office
The Vermont State Police on Thursday cited a suspect in an aggravated assault that occurred last week in Bolton.
On June 16 at about 9:47 p.m., troopers from the Williston Barracks responded to the area of Country Club Drive in the Town of Bolton for what was initially reported as a road-rage incident that had started on Nashville Road in the town of Jericho.
Upon arriving on scene, troopers located William Mercer, 20, of Bolton, who stated he was involved in an altercation with an unknown man, later identified as Travis McGrath, 38, also of Bolton. During this altercation Mercer stabbed McGrath several times in the abdomen and torso.
McGrath initially was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington by a family member and later by Richmond Rescue for what were determined to be serious, life-threatening injuries. McGrath remains hospitalized, and his condition is reported to be stable.
After consulting with the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office, Mercer was issued a citation through his attorney on the night of Thursday, June 23. Mercer is scheduled to appear for arraignment at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Burlington.
Charges against Mercer are Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Disorderly Conduct, and Negligent Operation.

So this miscreant stabbed someone, resulting in “serious, life-threatening injuries” and he’s out and about ? Is that the way that someone charged with “Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Disorderly Conduct, and Negligent Operation” is usually handled ? Who was the S.A. who decided this was a good idea was George Gascon, Chesa Boudin ?
Many layers to the criminal justice problems in Vermont. Public Safety is politicized as is our Judicial branch. If we could see behind the veil and listen between the walls, many bureaucrats and elected officials are corrupt. The long festering issues with Corrections, State’s Attorney Offices, Defender General, the Courts, and the Administration are all responsible and do nothing to fix it. The situation with crime in Vermont will continue to esculate because the word is out “do the crime, unlikely to do any time.”
Remember that we must first acknowledge that the person who wielded the knife is the victim of society’s failings, of a mental illness which we must recognize as a “disability” or is just still in recovery from the trauma of the Trump Presidency. He is deserving of our empathy and understanding. The recipient of the knife wounds is simply collateral damage. We have learned these valuable lessons in life by gifted and enlightened public servants like our beloved Chittenden County State’s Attorney, Sarah George and others of like mind. We are so fortunate to have them maintaining public safety and promoting equity. Kumbaya!
