129 MPH on Rte. 7

Steven Lopez, 39, of Chicopee MA will go before a judge after he was clocked speeding at 129 mph in Shaftsbury, state police say.

At 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, state troopers were monitoring traffic along U.S. Route 7 in Shaftsbury. Troopers observed Lopez’s vehicle overtake another vehicle and continue at a high rate of speed, which was confirmed to be 129 mph in a posted 55 mph speed zone.

Troopers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified the operator as Lopez.

Lopez was issued a citation to appear in Bennington Superior Court – Criminal Division to answer to the charges of Careless and Negligent Operation and Excessive Speed. Lopez is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 17.

Police didn’t say what model of vehicle Lopez was driving.

  1. Issued a “citation”? This is seriously reckless and endangers the lives of others – What kind of state turns these criminals loose into traffic after this? Why wasn’t his vehicle impounded? Wake up Vermont, for God’s sake!

    • I agree Kathy with your comment. I have my own opinion as to why his car was not impounded, but I would be called a familiar kind of individual. Was his car searched? Did they hold his license?. Did they run an FBI check. He will never be seen again! Was their a justice of the peace in that town?
Many decades ago on military leave at Christmas on a Sunday listening to the female friend with me going 40 in a 30 zone, local sheriff brought 3 cars to local JP fined; and paid right there by my friend, and lost license for 30 days. By the way the sheriff collected our license and told us to follow him to the JP’s house!.
