“We exist in pursuit of community-centered justice and holistic healing that prioritize impacted Act 128 communities,” the report’s mission statement reads, referring to the demographic groups outlined in the 2022 state law that stood up the commission.
Those include people “who identify as Native American or Indigenous,” people with “physical, psychiatric or mental conditions or disabilities,” those who are Black or “other individuals of color,” people with “French Canadian, French-Indian or other mixed ethnic or racial heritage,” or any other communities that the commissioners see fit to include, the law states. ”
By the definition above, I was born in Vermont, within the United States of America, which makes me a native american and indigenous. (definition: originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native. (of people) inhabiting or existing in a land from the earliest times or from before the arrival of colonists.)
The group layed out a rather broad scope of definitions that covers one and all native Vermonters currently. My Irish elders came to Vermont from Quebec, Canada. They later mixed with other ethnic immigrants. The otherside was Scott and likely here before the State was made a State and one married a Native Indian. I would say I am, ifsofacto, of original “mixed ethnic” heritage and identify as such. Also, my feelings are deeply hurt from the Crown starving my ancestors and forcing them to flee their native lands. Therefore, I demand my reparations – six figures will suffice. I have the documentation. Thank you so much!
