UVM athletes can earn $$ for name, autograph, appearances

Following approval by the NCAA Board of Governors Wednesday afternoon, UVM Athletics is set to implement interim name, imagine and likeness (NIL) guidelines that go into effect on Thursday, July 1.

It is now permissible for UVM student-athletes to benefit from the use of their NIL so long as the compensation received is commensurate with the market and does not violate any NCAA or UVM policy, a UVM statement said. Compensation may be in the form of cash, product, or receipt of other benefits. Examples of permissible activities include:

  • Personal business activities
  • Advertising, promotion, endorsement and/or sponsorship of products and services
  • Camps, clinics, or private instruction
  • Autographs, Cameos or other personal memorabilia
  • Personal appearances
  • Social media activity

Prior to entering into any NIL agreement, student-athletes are required to disclose their activities to the UVM Athletic Department. This applies to written or verbal agreements, as well as fee for service work. Given that these guidelines are part of a new and evolving area of NCAA compliance, they are subject to change.
