A Vershire woman arrested last week for embezzling $186,000 from the Tunbridge Volunteer Fire Department over the last decade has been forced out as town manager in Williamstown.

“Jackie Higgins’ 14-year run as town manager in Williamstown officially ended Monday night, when the select board accepted a written resignation she tendered on Saturday after being arrested for embezzlement last Wednesday,” reported the Times Argus.

Higgins’ arrest took place at the Williamstown town offices last week. Though there is no evidence that Higgins embezzled from Williamstown, several in the community have suggested conducting a forensic audit.

Higgins will assist her as-yet unhired successor transition into the role.

“After consulting with a Burlington attorney and holding an emergency executive session late last week, [select board chair Larry] Hebert said the board negotiated an exit that will require the town to pay Higgins through the end to the year in exchange for her immediate resignation, and an agreement to remotely assist whoever is hired to replace her.”

  1. Imagine if we looked under the hood in Montpelier.
If you are wondering, why our taxes are so high in Vermont.

    Here’s your sign.

Friends don’t let friends be useful idiots.

  2. That makes no sense playing to a criminal. Considering that she was stealing money and arrested for it, that should have terminated her right then. Why pay her with taxpayers dollars to the end of the year in exchange for a resignation. Why coddle a thief. She made her choices. No one forced her to steal. She made herself a common criminal.
