A tanker truck fire shut down both lanes of I-89 in Colchester early Friday morning after the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

Vermont State Police responded at about 3:15 AM on July 17 to reports of a truck on fire in the roadway. A preliminary investigation found that a small tanker truck traveling southbound experienced an apparent mechanical problem that ignited the vehicle. The cause of the mechanical failure remains under investigation.

The driver, William Brodeur, 38, of St. Albans, was evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene and was not injured.

Both lanes of the roadway were closed while the Colchester Fire Department extinguished the blaze and secured the scene.

Vermont State Police were assisted by the Colchester Police Department, Colchester Fire Department and Colchester EMS.
