An 86-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon after being pulled from the waters of Lake Champlain off the western shore of North Hero, according to the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to the scene at about 3:04 PM on July 14 after receiving a report of an overdue swimmer. Marine units from across Grand Isle County, along with emergency medical personnel, responded to assist in the search.
The first deputy to arrive located the man in the water, swam out to reach him, and brought him back to shore. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the death is not considered suspicious. The victim’s identity is being withheld until family members have been notified.
The Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Office thanked the North Hero Fire Department, Grand Isle Fire Department, Grand Isle/North Hero Rescue Squad, South Hero Fire Department, the Grand Isle County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for assisting with the response and investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Office at 802-372-4482.
