Suspect took bar patrons hostage, made Molotov cocktails

23-year-old had 110 encounters with police

T.Ruggs Tavern on Elmwood Avenue in Burlington, scene of hostage and barricade incident Monday

A tense situation unfolded in Burlington Monday, January 22 as law enforcement responded to a barricaded scenario involving 23-year-old Tyshawn Lee at T. Rugg’s Tavern. The young man was wanted for alleged violations of release conditions and felony identity theft, prompting authorities to take action.

According to police, the incident began when an officer confronted Lee near North Champlain Street, informing him of his arrest. In response, Lee, armed with two cutting instruments, one pointed at the officer and the other at his own neck, retreated and managed to escape, initiating a pursuit. Multiple officers engaged in a chase, navigating through alleys, over fences, and across backyards, eventually witnessing Lee entering T. Rugg’s Tavern on Elmwood Avenue.

As officers approached, many patrons evacuated the bar, but two individuals found themselves trapped inside with Lee. The situation escalated as Lee secured the doors, barricading himself inside. Recognizing the complexity of the situation, Burlington Police called upon Vermont State Police for assistance around 5 p.m. The standoff endured until about 7 p.m. when one of the hostages, a female, managed to escape from Lee’s grasp.

Subsequently, the male hostage began resisting, leading to a confrontation with police. In a strategic intervention, police utilized less-lethal rounds, a flash-bang distraction device, and a police canine to subdue Lee. The male hostage was rescued, and Lee was taken into custody. The investigation revealed that Molotov cocktails, concocted by Lee, were discovered inside the bar.

Tyshawn Lee’s troubled history with the law came to light, with over 110 previous run-ins with the police. His arrest record included charges such as felony domestic assault, aggravated assault, simple assault, driving with a suspended license, and vandalism. Amid the intense situation, witnesses recounted Lee’s apparent crisis inside the bar. A woman inside with her friend described the moment when Lee, amidst a police presence outside, began crafting Molotov cocktails. Reacting to the escalating danger, she grabbed a bar stool, struck Lee, and fled with her friend. Fortunately, both hostages emerged unharmed from the ordeal.

The incident triggered a temporary lockdown of nearby schools as a precautionary measure, with students being released around 3:10 p.m. Authorities are still in the process of determining the charges for Monday night’s events. Individuals with additional information about Tyshawn Lee or the incident are encouraged to contact the Burlington Police Department at 802-658-2704.

  1. Another career criminal Sarah $oro$ George let free to roam Chittenden County to reoffend again & again. 110 run-ins with multiple arrests. This is B.S.!!

  2. How about resisting arrest, criminal threatening of police officers, and aggravated kidnapping for starts?

    • 110 strikes by the age of 23. There must have been a thorough invoking of the “rough upbringing defense” by our illustrious Chittenden County State’s Attorney.
Yet another case of celebrating diversity in the Old North End…

  3. 110 previous contacts with the police. The judge better add not taking hostages and not making Molotov cocktails when he released on conditions this time!!!😒

  4. just another day at the vermont zoo/// it shows that the monkeys are running the show///

  5. In 2020 he was caught purposefully setting 11 cars on fire, then in 2021 he held a gun to his girlfriends head and beat her, last August he was charged with a carjacking in Williston. These aren’t petty crimes this is a person who is either a career criminal or needs some serious help.

The system that we all pay dearly for via taxes failed miserably. This isn’t just a failure of Sarah George, it’s a failure of the whole system. On Friday, Feb 2nd 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Family/Criminal Courtroom 3A at the Chittenden County courthouse he’s being charged with 7 (hopefully now 8) cases going back to 2020.

    List of cases being heard:
    20-CR-03312
    21-CR-08037
    21-CR-09743
    22-CR-00924
    22-CR-09668
    23-CR-05830
    23-CR-12555
    23-CR-08506

We should all be paying attention or even reporting on (hint hint VDC) what Ryan Richards the deputy states attorney under Sarah George and the Democrat Governor Shumlin appointed judge Kevin Griffen does here.

    • For the 2021 incident he should have been sent to prison for many years. Do Burlington residents really want this guy on the streets? And we wonder why Vermont has the second highest murder rate in New England.

  6. The legal system is not being enforced in his case they are going to leave him on the street until he kills somebody. When is this B S going to stop

  7. We are reaping what we sow. When we don’t put up any boundaries as parents or society, when problems are small and manageable, things escalate, until you get situations like this.

Then of course Vermont is merciless if you make a mistake, getting back on your feet in near impossible, due to the inability to get housing, job, transportation at reasonable rates…..

Vermont has made a serious mess of things, thank fully it’s all man made so it’s easy to change.

  8. Where can we apply resources and common sense and statistical data to stop this madness? Surely Sarah George needs to step down or be forced out. Is she not playing the role of a co-conspirator? The road to blazes is paved with good intentions. She seems to not understand the criminal mindset and yet she is the state attorney?

  9. The VT Judicial System no longer enforces the law. Along with the marxist in the legislature they are far more concerned with the agenda to destroy a civilized society and disarm law abiding Vermonters.
Multiple violent crimes including carjacking, and he’s walking free.

Brian is correct, it isn’t all Sarah George’s fault. But Sarah George has a history of not holding criminals responsible. Like the drunk driver that struck my Wife while she was using a snow blower at our home in December of 2019. She was 20 feet from the road when he hit her.
He blew a .26 at 4 PM on a Tuesday afternoon. ( more than 3X the legal limit )
His 3rd DUI with injury resulting.
It was also a Hit and Run, he never stopped after he hit her.
Make sure you read that, his 3rd DUI with injury resulting, hit and run.
She suffered severe life changing injuries.
Thanks to Sarah George and the plea deal Judge Maley accepted the driver served less than two days in jail.
My Wife got a life sentence.

You all better wake up, this insanity is getting innocent people injured and killed.

  10. Don’t worry Burlington residents and visitors, it’s all good. The city council spent hours last night debating whether or not to have a ballot measure supporting Palestinians, opposing Israel. You’re in good hands as they clearly understand their purpose and responsibilities.

You get what you vote for.

    • MikefromtheWhites, not really supporting Palestinians. Supporting terrorism, totalitarianism, and opposing the democratic republic which is Israel.

    • Thank you Scott for making clear that important distinction. Approximately 75% of Palestinians support Hamas.

  11. Burlington needs a “Dirty Harry” to take care of problems like this…

  12. I’m so glad no one was killed. How in Vermont, the constitutional carry state, do we have this many deadly threats from a single actor, and the threat wasn’t neutralized? Maybe everyone knows him well enough to know he’s bluffing?

I’d be investigating arson in the area and see how many he is tied too. He might have already killed before. I’ll bet any amount of money that this guy is taking medications that have “homicide” listed in the side effects label. The school probably put him on them since age 5 to help him “pay attention”.

    • If the leadership of Burlington had their way, they would have outlawed the carrying of firearms for defensive purposes in a drinking establishment. Of course, those laws only apply to the law-abiding. A firearm in the hands of a competent individual trumps a gasoline bomb any day of the week.

  13. 110….vermont needs large collective prayer going on and make sure your armed 😯

  14. A 23 yr old man with a criminal file that must be transported in a wheelbarrow due to the sheer size and volume. Habitual offender statute in play or is that simply ignored by the prosecutor on purpose? To those who witnessed and were subjected to a maniac violent offender gone off the rails, pay attention to how the State treats that guy and leaves you to cope with the PTSD at your own expense and misery.

  15. Why did Chittenden county voters vote her in again? Ted Kenney was much preferred in the Democratic primary.

    • The obsessive desire for liberals to virtue signal is so pervasive that it even extends into the anonymity of the voting booth. The lack of common sense and rationality really is inexplicable. Ted Kenney is a fine man and is not owned by Team Soros. I certainly dont want to see any violent crime happen, but if it does happen, let the victims be those who voted for Sarah George…

    • “Why did Chittenden county voters vote her in again?”  Doesn’t say much about the average person that votes in Chittenden County these days, does it ? But then again, look at the totality of the loon vote in Chittenden Co.. They gave us Boinie Sanders, and the rest of the Looney Tunes characters. I really don’t know what kind of social/political disaster it will for them to abandon their march to anarchy, and the dissolution of the American Dream. These people are just so contrary to anything “American” that maybe they are best described as “anti-Americans”, or maybe even NWO (No World Order) warriors. JMO

  16. This is Vermont… so we’d better start a legal defense fund for the woman hostage who hit the terrorist over the head with a chair. Assault with ‘hate crime’ as an aggravating factor.
