FYI, the proposed snow tire ban is for STUDDED snow tires only.
“This bill proposes to prohibit, with certain exceptions, operation of vehicles equipped with studded snow tires on Vermont highways other than from November 1 to May 15.
The concern for public safety is overwhelmingly off kilter, once again, concerning H.162 As a third generation Vermonter, I know if you are going to make laws about tires on vehicles it should be setting snow tires on a car before a certain time, when snow and ice cover our roads. That is when we have bumper crashes, vehicles sliding beyond stop signs and traffic lights, vehicles going off the road, head on collisions, and where fatalities on Vermont roads increase. Once again Montpeculiar has the issue backwards. Every December when snow and ice are on the roads, I know a great number of drivers have not put snow tires on their vehicles. That should be considered C/N (careless and negligent) driving, but it isn’t. There is a difference between winter tires, and all-season.
In the real world things don’t always happen as want. This season I had to wait until Dec. 7th from the first week in November when I started calling around for an appointment because every garage was booked. And I’ve been told that the state of VT vehicles run snow tires the whole year to save from buying two sets of tires for each state vehicle.
The studded tire restriction is not for safety but to reduce wear and tear on paved roads
Exempt EVs from inspection for 40 months. LOL.
Just look at this list of nonsense. There is no reason why the VT legislature needs to meet every year. It could be every other year or limit the time to 90 days. This is beyond wasted money, it’s insanity on parade. Each so-called lawmaker needs to justify their existence so we get a list like this.
1000% agree. They cause a problem on purpose and then think they come back in a year or 2 with a “fix” and that only makes it worse due to their God complex….
Regarding H.162 are the climate justice warriors so confident of the warming climate such that they can warrant NO winter weather before Oct 31 and after May 15??? 1989 I built my foundation & subfloor, I covered it with a tarp and haybaled it. The last week of Oct (the 24th I think) it snowed 24”, yes 2 ft! That was the beginning of winter, it didn’t melt. Fast foward 10 or so years and I remember a heavy wet snow on Memorial Day weekend, such that we lost power. Weather patterns fluctuate and there is no guarantee of snow/ice free roads just because of arbitrary date. How much damage does the heavier than normal EVs do to the roads? How destructive is it to the roads when they catch fire? And they do! And why do EVs get off the hook for state inspection? Ball joints, tie-rods, control arms, brakes etc wear out equally as often (perhaps more, heavier) as ICE vehicles. The inmates have clearly taken over the asylum!
Our overlords do not care what us mere mortals think or know. The legislature is a circus of the absurd for us and one big party for them. Booze and shrimp cocktail gatherings by lobbyists and a back slapping good time for pushing the ideology forward toward the destruction of Vermont. Thank a Vermont voter for our misery!
So requiring people to remover studded snow tires during the summer is another example of state over reach? Much better to destroy the road surfaces that are already tough enough to maintain and then complain about the poor condition of the roadways.
I think the damage from studded tires is highly overrated, it’s not studded tires that create cavernous potholes and long stretches of patchwork pavement degradation (IMO). The newly ubiquitous texting, um rumble strips are just primer for pavement degradation. For folks who run studded snows, it’s not like they’re going to swap out to non studded snows. They will be without decent tires for the conditions potentially. For the record, I don’t run studs, but many do. This is just too much micromanaging in my mind. Vermont’s $h!++y roads are not due to studded tires by any stretch.
Thank you for this info, VDC. Always nice to see what could potentially be coming down the pipeline, legislatively.
