President Joe Biden has faced heavy criticism over the surge in illegal immigration since he took office, and now a coalition of states – including New Hampshire, but not Vermont – has formed to challenge the president on the issue.
So far, 26 governors have signed on to the creation of the “Border Strike Force,” a coalition of state leaders working together to fight Mexican cartels and to slow the massive spike in illegal immigration since early last year.
New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu signed on to initiative. However, Gov. Phil Scott hasn’t. Vermont Daily Chronicle asked why and received this reply today from press secretary Jason Maulucci: “The Governor gets many requests to sign on to letters, and to manage them we made a decision early to focus primarily on letters coordinated through the National Governors Association. The Governor does of course believe that border security is an important federal issue and should be a focus.”
“What happens at our nation’s Southern Border impacts every single community in America,” said Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who recently joined the coalition. “While President Biden largely ignores my colleagues and my proposals to secure our border and protect our communities, we are going to continue to be proactive in addressing these pressing issues. … Our ultimate goal is to improve public safety, protect victims from horrific crimes, reduce the amount of drugs in our communities, and alleviate the humanitarian crisis at the Southern Border.”
The move comes after the Biden administration’s decision to lift Title 42, a Trump-era immigration rule that allowed border agents to more easily expel illegal immigrants to prevent the spread of COVID-19 into the U.S.
Critics argue that after Title 42 is lifted, there will be an additional surge of illegal immigrants crossing the border. At least 50 members of the U.S House of Representatives have signed onto a legal challenge to Biden’s decision to lift the rule.
“It is beyond dispute that terminating the previous Title 42 policies will cause an overwhelming migrant surge and intensify the border crisis. Even CDC admits the obvious: the Termination Decision ‘will lead to an increase in the number of noncitizens being processed in DHS facilities,’” the Texas Public Policy Foundation said in a brief supporting the legal challenge. “Moreover, the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis anticipates that one million migrants could cross the southern border within the first six weeks of the Termination Decision’s effective date. CBP cannot handle the current level of illegal border entries and will certainly be incapable of dealing with a further surge.
“A senior Border Patrol official has warned that, within just ‘a few days’ of the termination of Title 42 policies, CBP will reach capacity and ‘will be forced to release subjects on the street,’ which will lead to continued surges of migrants,” the brief adds.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has acknowledged there will be an increase in illegal immigration because of the removal of Title 42.
The states signed on so far include Idaho, Arizona, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Some states have already sent National Guard troops to help secure the border.
“President Biden has failed to secure the border, so Republican Governors are launching a Border Strike Force to secure our communities,” South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said. “South Dakota has sent National Guard to the border. We will continue partnering with other states to protect our people.”

It’s good to see that people now recognize that under this administration, we ALL live in border states.
If anybody expects Vermont, with the overwhelming number loony lefties we have in Mount Peculiar, to sign on to an action like this, it’s time for you to wake up and cough the smelly ! Until we can put sane people under the “Golden Dumb”, we are doomed to be a state where supporting ideas like open boarders, and unchecked migration are viewed as righteous, and logical. Deaths caused by these ludicrous ideas will be ignored, or explained away, until they happen to enough people in power that they can not write them off anymore. It’s a pity isn’t it ?
Scott will NEVER sign. He’ll get his peeps to make up some zany reason why he “cannot”. He wants re-election, I’m sure. Yet again.
Well, the governor turned his back on the republican party and his supporters so now he has to pander to the zany lefties to be re-elected. If he announced his retirement the republican party might be able to elect a real republican. One who stands up for the America and the Vermont our ancestors would recognize. Sitting on a fence is an uncomfortable spot. Sooner or later you have to shift positions or your butt goes to sleep. A fence sitter is not a leader. A leader does what’s for the people. A nation without borders is not a nation destroys a country. You would think that should an important issue would outweigh an election decision!
Every concerned Vermont Citizen should write to Governor Scott (https://vermont.force.com/vermontce/s/governor-office-ce) and tell him that we want him to sign on to the letter with the other 26 Republican governors of border states. It’s a matter of national and state sovereignty and public safety.

I couldn’t believe it a couple of years ago when Welch and Leahy tried (and I think succeeded) in limiting the distance US Customs and Border Protection could follow a suspect incoming vehicle from the Canadian border into Vermont. I think they are required to cut off pursuit after 40-60 miles. I was astonished that a couple of “pols” could do this. Does anyone else remember this issue?
Gov Scott has lost my vote; and i hope most of Vermont; He absolutely needs to sign on to this and show us all he has something of his old self left……even then, I will not vote for him again ever……
I have no problem with immigration so long as it is legal……our county was formed by immigrants, legal immigrants …….this is crazy. we need age limits and TERM LIMITS NOW…….
