School shorts: Free tuition at VSU/ Golf champ/ BLM mural defaced

By Guy Page

Now students from nearly half of Vermont households can attend Vermont State University tuition-free.

The new Freedom & Unity program, launched by the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC) in partnership with Vermont State University (VTSU), covers full tuition for Vermonters with household incomes of $65,000 or less. Eligible students must not already hold a bachelor’s degree and must be enrolled in an approved two- or four-year undergraduate program at VTSU.

In sports, U-32 High School freshman phenom Bubba Chamberlain captured the Vermont Principals’ Association Division II Golf Individual State Championship on Tuesday, October 7, at Dorset Golf Club. Chamberlain shot a two-over-par 74 to win by a single stroke over Mattie Serafin and posted the lowest score among all Division I and II golfers. He now advances to the New England Golf Championships later this month.

The U-32 boys team, coached by Brian Cain, placed sixth overall, marking its first trip to the state tournament since 2021.

In other news, Milton police are investigating another act of vandalism targeting the Black Lives Matter mural in front of Milton High School. According to The Milton Independent, officers were called to Rebecca Lander Drive on Saturday, Oct. 4, after damage was discovered to a mural painted on an electrical box.

Police Chief Frank Scalise said Tuesday that the department could not release further details while the investigation is active.

The mural has been vandalized before — in June 2024, blue and green paint was splashed across the same student-created artwork, which was installed after the school board voted to remove the BLM flag from the school’s flagpole.

  1. Re: “…attend Vermont State University tuition-free.”

Tuition free??? What’s that? No professors, no classrooms?

Oh… I get it. ‘Free’ means the taxpayers pay the tuition.

    • Nothing is Free. State propaganda… They should say “full tuition assistance available” so we know WE ARE PAYING out of THEIR GENEROSITY…

  2. ………”Now students from nearly half of Vermont households can attend Vermont State University tuition-free.

Nearly half of VT households is 65k a yr or less??? A quick Google search say’s otherwise. Be careful how you use numbers and locations.

  3. The golf story doesn’t mention the “women” where a boy pretending to be a girl from Burlington took second place (tie). Leaving the true third place winner off the podium. We’re still doing this here in VT apparently.
