Sanders blames Trump and Johnson for shutdown

At a CNN town hall on Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt), expressed frustration during a heated exchange with a young GOP attendee over his question about Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s and his handling of the ongoing government shutdown.

Flanked by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Sanders took a question from American University student Rohan Naval, a Republican, who pressed him on how the shutdown reflected Schumer’s leadership.

“How do you think this shutdown reflects on Schumer’s leadership,” asked Naval.

Sanders shifted the blame, stating, “It reflects more on Mike Johnson’s leadership and President Trump’s leadership. Do you think it’s right to push for $1 trillion in tax breaks for the wealthiest while cutting healthcare for working-class families?”

Naval responded, “Chuck Schumer has supported continuing resolutions 13 times in the last four years and has the chance to vote for one now, but he’s refusing to negotiate.”

Sanders responded, “There are 53 Republicans in the Senate, right? They need 60 votes. That means you have to talk to the other side. Mike Johnson isn’t talking. John Thune isn’t talking. President Trump isn’t talking. That’s the issue.”

Republicans have pointed fingers at Schumer, accusing him of stalling the shutdown to appease the Democratic Party’s progressive faction.

During the same CNN town-hall, both Senator Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were hesitant to give President Trump credit for the peace deal in the middle east.

They both acknowledged the hostage release as a “tremendous accomplishment” providing “healing to so many people, Israelis and Palestinians,” but AOC insisted that “President Trump was an obstacle to peace previously, as well,” while expressing concerns about the ceasefire’s durability.

“This is not a time for credit. This is a time to think about American policy,” said Sanders, claiming “The entire infrastructure of Gaza… have been destroyed under Trump,” and criticizing $22 billion given to Netanyahu’s government for policies that “have been starving children.”

Sanders however did say he was happy that the hostages had been released and added that he hoped peace in the region would last.

  1. Interesting take on negotiation, Dems say give us what we want then we can talk! They say it is about funding health care but never say for American Citizens and claim GOP will not make healthcare affordable, interesting since the Democrats single handedly made Healthcare Affordable by passing the Affordable Care Act a/k/a Obamacare without GOP support, it is by definition already affordable

    • As is obvious to anyone with a brain continuing down the Obamacare road is the worst thing that could happen. Time to rethink things because that was a huge failure! Definitely NO to healthcare for illegals! We voted against that whether the Democrats like it or not! We aren’t backing down. Wasteful tax dollar spending on BS Climate crap, especially for a foreign country! Nope! No to all that waste! America First! They can sort out their own problems! We can’t continue to babysit and support the rest of the World!

  2. The House did its job and passed the CR. You are trying, not very well, to deflect responsibility for the Senate Democrats’ utter failure. If you and the other useless Senator representing Vermont voted to reopen the government, we would get a lot closer to 60.

  3. Hate to tell you, Bernie, but Gaza began with your boy, Biden. He did nothing. He offered nothing. I’m not a Donald J. Trump fan but for now, a fragile cease fire is in place because of him and a lot of the world is happy about it. I guess you have the mentality that since it is currently Trump’s watch, it’s all his fault. I will keep this in mind for when one of your Democrats inherits something. No more blaming the previous administration I guess?

    As to the shutdown. The way I see it, if the House and Senate aren’t in session, they aren’t screwing up anything. It’s quite simple, open the government and let’s get to work. Oh yeah, honest work is something that escapes you since you never did so.

  4. Democrats just voted down a continuation of previous spending for several months for the 10th time!!

  5. Hey Bernie, I thought you were an Independent. Obviously not anymore, so please stop lying about it.

  6. Hey Bernie mittens Sanders go suck Beaver pond water hopefully you will not choke 😮

  7. Wait until the Medicare Advantage plans are all gone in Vermont and we will see what it is like when a few thousand people go bankrupt in Vermont. Looks like the powers that are, will end up reducing the senior population for lack of health care. Now, who do we blame for that??????? Comment from Richard Day

    • Never has been! He switches to Democrat to run but truly is a total Communist! Always will be!

  8. Looks like the medical cartel will have to get by with the eighty percent payment from Medicare and adjust their budgets for the future. This is a more important subject than some of the other conversations on this website. Comment from Richard Day.

  9. Just a glimpse of Democratic demands (about 1/3 of the $1.5 Trillion they are asking to stop the government shutdown.)
    This $1.5 trillion of tax payer money would make interest rates go up. It would force the cost of products to go up. It would force employers to cut back on employees, increasing the unemployment.

    $358 billion – making permanent
    COVID era Obama Care
    subsidies without any income
    caps or any other reforms.
    $200 billion – adding illegal aliens
    back to tax payer funded
    healthcare.
    $500,000 million – to fund liberal
    news outlets.
    $24.6 million – climate resilience in
    Honduras
    $ 13.4 million – civic engagement in
    Zimbabwe.
    $ 3.9 million – LGBTQI+ for
    democracy grants in the
    Western Balkins.
    $ 2.9 million – desert locust risk
    reduction in the Horn of Africa.
    $ 2.0 million – organizing for feminist
    democratic principles in Africa.

    Just a sample of the long list of Demands

  10. See he wants to “save our democracy”……too bad we are a republic, nobody wanted nor asked for a democracy, where the majority take from the minority.

    See what happens when you have free speech and real people asking questions?

  11. Question. How can a company offering health care insurance in a state pick only certain counties to provide coverage?????? Comment from Richard Day. I will be waiting for an answer as I do not have this answer.

    • Their idea of healthcare is pathetic. We’ll take your exorbitant premiums, give you minimal services, close up shop at the end of the year, and repeat.

  12. Bernie, you’ve been in Congress since 1991 I believe. The federal government has shut down I believe six times while you’ve been in Congress. Now who truly shares the blame for the government shutting down? When is the last time Congress had its collective act together, or even our state legislature. The masters of kicking the can down the road, giving yourselves raises and additional perks, and going on vacation. Ye have no shame.
