Roll call#1! House passes $8.8 billion (& growing) budget

by Guy Page

In response to a grassroots call to know who is voting for Montpelier’s unprecedented spending, VDC is continuing a tradition begun by the Ethan Allen Institute: Roll Call!

Today, our first roll call is the March 28 104-39 House vote on H.883, the proposed 2024-2025 state budget. An amendment to add about $26 million in spending already approved in other House bills was rejected 41-97 on a mostly “party-line” vote.

In offering her ‘transparency’ amendment to H.883 on the House floor this morning, Donahue did not specifically object to the $25.75 million in spending – just its lack of inclusion in the proposed budget.

“It’s the transparency to the public that is most important here,” Donahue said.

“I don’t think we should be voting on a budget that pretends a certain amount of spending,” Donahue said. “Transparency to our constituents is one of our most important obligations.”

Supporters of the House-approved budget say the budget process is far from over, because it still needs to pass the Senate. They also say the dollar amount is similar to the budget proposed by Gov. Phil Scott. Gov. Scott said it fails to adequately address the housing crisis and other longterm, pressing issues.

“As the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee explained in her floor report, ‘This budget so closely remains within the Governor’s Recommend budget that, after accounting for the $12 million pension plus payment, the difference in General Funds is within a 0.2 percent (not even one half of one percent) difference.’ In dollars, that’s no more than a $3.3 million
difference between the House budget and the Governor’s Recommend,” Rep. Carol Ode (D-Burlington), said when explaining her yes vote.

  1. No words.
Who can even count that high?
    Prostitution people… prostitutions.
What are the biggest money makers on the planet?
THAT is what will pay this bill coming due.
Corruption and vise: the door is now open.

  2. Today, our first roll call is the March 28 104-39 House vote on H.883, well this shows that there are ” 39 ” heroes in the state house, standing front & center to stop this nonsense…….

You see the names listed on the ” YEA” votes, so light them up with your concerns about the out-of-control spending that’s killing you financially with all the bloated taxes, and sinking the State deeper into debt !!

Wake up people, and let them know your concerns.

    • Did your Vermont state representative spit in your face, pick your pockets and vote to raise your taxes so high that you may find yourself homeless? Mine did. Thanks again John Arrison (D) of Weathersfield, Cavendish and Baltimore.

    • Stu Lindberg, Both of my Representatives voted Nay. Thank you Reps Donahue and Goslant.

  3. Of course they did because they have no accountability of their spending and will just increase property taxes pushing more people out of the little California they are creating.

  4. When will voters realize that they have the power to stop this legislature from burying them in more and more debt, it will change. Maybe this year!!!!!!

  5. New Hampshire has about twice as many people as Vermont, but their state budgets do not mirror that ratio. New Hampshire’s state budget has run $6.5 billion per year for each year of their two year budget cycle. Vermont’s $8.8 billion budget will blow NH out of the water in state spending. NH spends less than $5,000/resident in services. Vermont spends almost $10,000/resident. Both rely on high property taxes, but NH is still near the bottom of the nation in overall tax burden, while Vermont is near the top. New Hampshire does have more legislators (400 Reps, 24 Senators) than Vermont (150, 30). NH pays travel and $200 per term ($100/year). Understandably, NH legislators usually do not stick around long and getting 424 people to agree on anything means they only do what has to be done and get out of Dodge. The result is the government can’t do as much damage to the state and to its citizens.

    • So, what you’re saying is that we should all blow this joint and move to NH. I’m all in. THATS what the legislature wants. They are killing us with taxes, killing businesses with taxes. Had a small business owner just last week kissing the ring and on her knees begging at their feet to stop taxing us….and she voted for them!!! Did it help? HA HA HA NO!! THEY…..>DO…NOT……..CARE
