Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies captured two Bradford residents Monday evening in Massachusetts after a weeklong search.

Kayla Cabey and Justin French

Justin French, 36, and Kayla Cabey, 33, were wanted in connection with a September 20 road rage incident on U.S. Route 302 in South Ryegate that ended in gunfire. Vermont State Police had secured New England-wide and New York extraditable arrest warrants for the pair on charges including two counts of first-degree attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and criminal threatening.

Authorities had warned the public that French and Cabey were armed and dangerous and asked anyone with information on their whereabouts to call police rather than approach them. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and additional updates are expected.

Gasoline theft in Bradford
Police are investigating a series of vandalism incidents at RT-5 Auto in Bradford. On September 15, the business owner reported that multiple vehicles had been damaged over two weekends. Investigators determined that holes had been drilled into the gas tanks and the gasoline siphoned into containers. Replacing each damaged tank could cost nearly $2,000.

Evidence was collected from the scene and is being processed in an effort to identify the suspects. The Bradford Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward.

Inmate death in Orleans
Vermont State Police are investigating the death of Richard Davis, 78, of Orleans, who died in prison early Saturday morning. Department of Corrections staff found Davis unresponsive in his cell at about 4:41 a.m. on September 27 and attempted life-saving measures while summoning emergency responders. He was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. The death is believed to be the result of a medical event, though an autopsy by the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington will determine the official cause and manner of death.

Davis had been incarcerated since 1993 on kidnapping and simple assault charges. Detectives from the VSP Bureau of Criminal Investigations are handling the case.

Crash into boulder in Smugglers Notch
A Cambridge crash Sunday afternoon caused significant traffic delays through Smugglers’ Notch.

Vermont State Police said they responded at 1:18 p.m. September 28 to a single-vehicle collision on Route 108 South. Investigators determined Clesson Rounds, 67, of Essex, was driving a 2019 Ford F-150 when the vehicle ahead of him came to an abrupt stop. To avoid striking it, Rounds swerved left and hit a large rock head-on. He suffered minor injuries, and his truck sustained heavy front-end damage.

In a separate incident, this weekend also saw another tractor-trailer ‘stuckage’ in the Notch.
