Meg Hansen to seek Bennington Senate seat Nov. 3

Former Lt. Gov. candidate nominated by GOP committee to run against Democrats Sears, Campion in southwestern county

August 24, 2020 – Former Republican Lt. Governor candidate Meg Hansen in Manchester today announced her candidacy to represent Bennington County in the Vermont Senate. She was nominated by party committee to run for this position in the November 3 general election.

Democrats Richard Sears and Brian Campion are the incumbents. Mike Hall also will run on the GOP ticket, according to a preliminary listing of ALL Nov. 3 candidates for state office published August 21 by the Vermont Secretary of State’s office. Kevin Hoyt is running as an independent.

Hansen said, “Following the primary election, the call to run for the state Senate came from several members of our Hansen campaign family. This is a family of Vermonters brought together by our shared passion and convictions to build a prosperous future for all. I am honored to be able to answer this call again. I see it as a mandate from the people to continue our steadfast mission to turn a new page for Vermont.”

“We ran a powerful grassroots campaign this year, advocating for middle class and working families, young people, and seniors on fixed incomes, whose needs and interests have been unfairly overlooked for too long. We won southern Vermont towns hands down because our message reached and resonated with the voters. Representing Bennington County in the Senate is in keeping with my primary goal, which is to give voice to Vermonters in under-represented parts like southern Vermont.” Hansen added.

The Hansen campaign of “Small Towns and Big Hearts” champions: 1) economic growth by cutting punitive regulatory and tax burdens; 2) maximizing access to high quality, innovative, and inexpensive choices in health services and health insurance, and 3) empowering parents and students with education freedom across the county.

Hansen said, “My personal and professional life has been rooted in southern Vermont for the last decade. I have seen the hollowing out of our economy, exodus of families and small businesses, and a culture of despair, addiction, and death consuming our towns and communities. I strongly disagree with the politicians and experts who claim that this is the new normal for us. We can build a prosperous future for all with policies that foster economic development, create upwardly mobile jobs, and end monopolies in the healthcare, energy, and education sectors.”

Hansen is trained in medicine (M.B.B.S. – British equivalent of a US M.D.) and graduated with an M.A. from Dartmouth College. She led a health policy think tank for several years. She is a member of the Vermont Medical Reserve Corps, serving as needed at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. If elected, Hansen will be the only senator with a medical education and in-depth knowledge of Vermont’s healthcare system.

“Most importantly, I look forward to using my degree in medicine and health policy expertise to ensure a successful post-COVID recovery, while keeping Vermonters safe and healthy during these trying times,” Hansen concluded.

Born in India, Meg Hansen is a proud American citizen and lives with her husband Rick in Manchester. To learn more about her campaign, visit hansenforvermont.com and www.facebook.com/HansenForVermont.
