Consequences limited due to Vermont’s lack of secure rehabilitation services for youthful offenders

A case of a man viciously attacked by a group of juveniles near Burlington City Hall last week has turned into a homicide, Vermont News First learned this afternoon.

The name of the dead victim has not been released, but he died over the weekend, Vermont News First was told.

Interim Burlington Police Chief Shawn Burke confirmed this afternoon that the beating victim from last week had died.

“It is an active investigation,” Burke said.

Vermont News First and some of its outlets were the first to report the death.

Burlington Police said it had officers on foot patrol on Church Street about 1:30 p.m. Monday Aug. 11 when they came across the assault in progress with the injured man.

The three juveniles fled on foot and by bicycle, but the officers were able to chase down the suspects, Lt. Mike Henry said.

The three youths, believed to be roughly 14 to 16 years old, are facing proceedings in Vermont Family Court. Those proceedings are confidential and have very limited consequences due to the lack of rehabilitation services for youthful offenders within Vermont.

One suspect carried a gun, and police determined it was displayed while they attacked the victim, Henry reported. He said additional arrests were anticipated.

The victim was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment of critical injuries. His condition went downhill in recent days.

Burke said his department has been working closely with the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office on the case.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Burlington Police at (802) 658-2700.

  1. Yup this is the latest in VT and VT can’t handle it.
“The three youths, believed to be roughly 14 to 16 years old, are facing proceedings in Vermont Family Court. Those proceedings are confidential and have very limited consequences due to the lack of rehabilitation services for youthful offenders within Vermont.”

They ain’t “under age youths” that need pampering. Give them a serious life’s learning experience. This is a killing. They should see the light of day again. Now there’s Liberal AG, lawyers, legislators that will feel compassion for the killes and will be back on the street to repeat. Have to pack heat, should make good fish bait. “Parents, do you know where your children are?” (as if they had parents). Vt has gone to a place called HELL.

    • Broad daylight, just after lunch in fact, on the lawn of City Hall Burlington no less, people are beaten to death, no assistance from bystanders.

How quickly we’ve changed from real estate closings where people couldn’t find their house key, because they never used it, to people being pummeled to death on the Mayors lawn of what was our finest city.

Chittenden county is being subverted by marxist thugs, who want this crime. ANYONE in Burlington knows how much crime is going on, they see people stealing shopping carts of merchandise from local stores EVERYDAY!!!!!!

Thankfully our problems are manmade, so they can quickly be solved.

Don’t see this on the front page of VTDIGGER……..What about VPR?

oh, and just so everybody knows, there are no gangs in Vermont. Those gang paintings you see are just local youth imitating their art.

    • And our Sorros trained states attorney will probably treat them to free Ben and Jerry’s and let them walk out the door with a slap on the wrist and tell them not to do it again.

  2. “Youths”…besides being of the age where they bear zero responsibility, dare I ask if there is any other obvious demographic description that is common to the bunch? Since the perpetrators are legally pretty much in the clear, I am going to put most the blame on Lyndon Johnson and his “great” society aspirations.

    • And remember that LGB era of “peaceful fires” when all those “people” (for lack of a better word) did was burn apartment buildings to the ground in NYC in order to get the free $$$ that they were promised for being homeless via the false pity they were publicly extended by politicos like LGB who knew it would translate into votes for the democrat party in the end.

Today, it is first degree murder that is being tolerated & enabled all for the same voting block and in order to transform this Republic into some unrecognizable Marxist dystopia.

And how old was the victim, by the way? What is his description, may I ask? What is the deep, dark secret here? Public information wants to know.

    • The true beginning of the social rot that has penatrated all levels of our society! A clear example of the road to hell being paved with good intentions.

  3. Hold the parents (or parent) accountable. If this gets buried, Vermont has entered the dead zone.

    • Definitely! They need to be prosecuted as adults! They committed Murder! Especially the 16 yo with the Gun!

  4. Time to reconsider ” juvenile” escapades differ from adult behaviour, these kids need hard time to realize that taking a life is not kids play

  5. It is on the news today, (not the ABCCBSNBCMSNBCFOXCNN hollywood news), that there’s left wing violence all around the nation. For the most part, financed by the terrorist Soros. and his ilk and people in VT government are mainly left wing. Therefore killings, violence, high crime rates are the norm. Solution, pack heat, I do for self survival.

  6. Consequences limited due to Vermont’s lack of secure rehabilitation services for youthful offenders. Really? Maybe it should read, Consequences limited due to Vermont’s lack of no death penalty for murders.

    • Rehabilitation you say? How about PUNISHMENT? These thugs killed another human like a pack of predatory animals roaming the streets of Vermont. When will these Pollyanna liberal policies be flushed down the toilet for what they truly represent?

  7. Just now, on the non-commercial networks, youth crime spree is out of control in Seattle and noting also along the west coast. VT wants to be like CA, so VT also has youth gangs. Note, this crime sprees happen mostly in Liberal Blue states and cities ref Wash DC, Baltimore etc. I believe the population of VT remains at a sustainable level, Residents, Conservatives, peaceful people are leaving and being replaced by criminals, gangs, murderers etc. Status quo. If one can survive in VT, you have 9 lives, and must have a good bank account, all the power to you.

    • I would contend that gang violence happens mostly in large cities, and that most large cities vote blue. You are assigning a causality that may not exist. It is the size of the city that is the main factor in gang violence, not the political leanings of its occupants.

  8. Recall City Hall demanded to review police reports prior to public release – there seemed to an inexplicable lull in crime reporting (not on this publication, but others.) Yet, the grisly reality can’t be covered up no matter what the overlords say or do. Too many lives being ruined and destroyed with impunity.

If you have your bingo cards handy – when will the VT National Guard be called forth and we see “force multipliers” initiated in our liberal sanctuary hamlets? If they are not all ready under “national emergency declaration?” If a piece of property is under federal registry – it is their jurisdiction under their discretion.

ICE.gov: “As of August 18, 2025 3:32 pm, ICE has signed 896 Memorandums of Agreement for 287(g) programs covering 40 states. These include JEM agreements with 122 law enforcement agencies in 27 states, 287(g) WSO agreements with 331 law enforcement agencies in 35 states, and 287(g) TFM agreements with 443 agencies in 40 states. ”

If 40 States out of 50 are signing up – that is not good odds for the 10 holding out hope they’ll get away with criminal conspiracies and other deeds done dirty. Best be getting prepared – things may get jiggy rather quickly. Seems to me the hammer is about to drop with a bang, boom, splat. “No one is above the law.” We’ll find if that holds true or not soon enough.

  9. Will the governor be shaken into doing something about crime in Vermont, or will he take more rights from the citizens?

Will any leadership speak up about the wrong direction Vermont is going?

  10. Tourism marketing ploy, “Come to Vermont, nearly as safe as LA, Chicago and DC.”

  11. Kid’s my Yankee butt!
How about man murdered by young murderous thugs!

  12. Now, you have to understand that these young people—remember that they are indeed people, our people—didn’t know that what they were doing to this man was wrong, because their poor little brains are not yet fully developed. So the legislature, in its wisdom, has limited the consequences that these young people can be subjected to.

So now let’s consider the consequences that can be imposed on those legislators who have taken us down this path. The consequences are administered at the ballot box, and the first one to experience them should be House Committee Chair Martin LaLonde of South Burlington.

    • He looks like a cross between Pee Wee Herman, and Mr. Rogers with a bowtie.

    • That would be great, but sadly he has typically run unopposed. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong. He needs a viable opponent if he’s going to be deposed.

    • And yet, the same young people whose brains are not yet fully developed—and are, therefore, not responsible for their actions—are the same ones for whom the leftists want to lower the voting age so these young people can vote intelligently and rationally to elect more adults whose common sense and moral compass is not yet fully developed.

  13. Long ago, I moved to VT as someone who mostly voted, volunteered and donated to left of center causes and candidates for 4 decades. I was dedicated to supporting locally owned business, and being a contributing part of an active community. I have been so disgsuted by the feckless leaders of this state that in the last election I voted red up and down the ticket to break the fauxalists stranglehold of power. I don’t think party affiliation means anything anymore. Perhaps it never did. But these people are nothing like the community of truly caring people that I am accustomed to. They are knee-jerk authoritarian narcissists when it involves their own nefarious activity as corporate prostitutes, and anemic milk toasts when making pragmatic decisions that will benefit the people of Vermont. Their cries for justice are sheep’s clothing. It’s all smoke and mirrors…3 card Monty. They will let violent criminals run free while fabricating false charges to impinge upon the human, civil, and Constitutional rights of innocent people who have no record of speeding tickets much less violent criminal records. However, thuggery is certainly not a left vs right issue. Bullies and psychopaths are raised by bullies and psychopaths, and they do not have a political ideology. That is a cultural failing that is woven through the fabric of this society.

    • Yet even a brute beast responds to punishment.
Even a one brain cell person learns quickly not to put their hand back on the red hot burner…….

  14. RGB, Now that you brought up the subject, maybe our chosen representatives should have to vanpool from their localities. Be picked up at a specified time, be at work, in Montpelier, and seated in their taxpayer funded, and individually numbered seat by 7:30am, put in a FULL days work, then load back on their vans (yellow busses?), and get dropped off at their approved site where they can then walk home from. Sound familiar ? If our Representatives are going to act like children, maybe it’s about time they were treated as such ? These people stroll into the State House whenever it’s convenent, leave when they want, and work four days a week, They don’t work Mondays, and on Fridays, the parking lots, and spaces which are reserved for them, are about half empty on Fridays by noon. And they want to become full time ? MInd you there are some good people under ther Golden Dome, but there are also a lot of ………..

  15. When will the liberal do-gooders be pushed aside in this state and criminals be dealt with in, harshest manner and levels of criminal justice system! You call them “kids”, I say no, they are hoodlums or feral teenage predators!! They must be reigned in and held to account for killing an innocent man.

  16. Tell you what. I will go along with going light on the kids IF the parents are all held accountable and go to jail for murder.

    • I say that sometimes – it is not the parents fault… for example my kids are perfect and I had nothing to do with that… (just a little humor there). But for real, parents are not always at fault for their children’s actions. I do have examples. Watch that “hard’ line.

    • Sorry John but I disagree. Those kids are old enough to know what is right and wrong. But I agree the parents should be held accountable too!

    • You can’t hold somebody else for another’s crime, it matters not if they are parents, children or friend. We are flawed enough.

  17. So sad, and sadder yet had the victim been packing and killed even one of those in self defense…he’d be in a world of trouble right now, unlike these kids who most likely have launched their lifetime criminal careers! ☺️

  18. No “rehab” facilities in Vermont for youthful offenders? Send them to facilities out of state, like we do for adult offenders. But it can’t be because the prisons are overcrowded; the judges hardly send anyone to prison in Vermont.

  19. Marxist thugs? How are these teens marxists. I bet none of them know who Karl Marx was much less the ideology that followed him. Rather gilding the lily on that one.

  20. Apparently you all have forgotten or never knew about the Hamlin and Savage. The murder, rape and torture the committed made legislators change the law so that juveniles who commit heinous crimes could be tried and punished as an adult. Although this happened in the early 80’s you can find info about it on the web https://www.timesargus.com/news/1981-crime-shocked-vermont/article_40ee3e48-c297-5ea1-a815-e4e8ce3d9321.html Any one besides me notice that as consequences diminish problems arise? Sorry time outs ain’t cutting it

  21. Well, the local media is screaming about a horrible hate crime perpetrated by three youths, so draw your own conclusions…
