Williston resident and retired Air National Guard Col. Bruce Roy has announced he is running for the Vermont Senate in the Chittenden Southeast District in 2026, pledging to focus on affordability, tax relief and education reform.
Roy announced his candidacy this week through his campaign organization, Roy4VT, saying he believes “Vermont’s future is too important for me to stay on the sidelines.” Javen Sears of South Burlington also is running as a Republican for one of the district’s three seats.
In 2024, Roy was a Republican nominee for the same district, now held by Democrat Sens. Tom Chittenden, Virginia Lyons, and Kesha Ram Hinsdale.
According to his 2024 campaign bio, Roy is a long time Vermont resident, graduating from Essex Junction High School and the University of Vermont. After a four year tour on USAF active duty, he returned to Vermont joining IBM as an engineer and continuing his military service as a member of the Vermont Air National Guard. He retired as a Colonel from the Green Mountain Boys in 2008, and from IBM in 2013.
Roy was also an Essex School Board member, and a 10 year instructor at the Community College of VT. He has been a Williston resident since 2001 when he and his wife Cindy built a home on Martel Hill while he was called to active Air Force duty immediately following September 11.
“The ROY4VT TEAM is gathering signatures on my petition this month in time for the August primary,” Roy said in his announcement this week. “We need to get Vermont affordable immediately … we should not have to accept another two years of political stalling and no progress on tax relief and education reform.”
Roy said electing more “common sense legislators” aligned with Republican Gov. Phil Scott would help “get Vermont back on track.”
“I am ready, willing & able to go to Montpelier and work for Vermont’s future,” Roy said.
The Chittenden Southeast Senate district includes communities in the greater Burlington area, including South Burlington. Roy formally kicked off his campaign May 3 and posted a campaign announcement video online.
Roy’s campaign website is Roy4VT.org.

Thank you for your service. It may be one of your biggest services to uproot any of your district’s leaders – Tom Chittenden, Virginia Lyons, and Kesha Ram Hinsdale. I hope you can find a team of candidates and team to take out all 3. Other Vermonters – take note. His efforts to do such a feat may need some outside help. Bruce, I hope you can do a big – look at what the Democrats have brought us campaign that will shift gears not only in your Democrat stronghold, but to all of Vermont. Again – Thank you for your service.
