A Pownal Elementary School student on Wednesday, March 19 brought an unloaded 9mm handgun and 67 rounds of ammunition to school and sent a message about it on social media, Bennington County Sheriff James Gulley said.
According to Gulley’s social media statement, students who saw the message immediately told their teachers, who followed school safety procedures and got help right away.
“Their quick thinking helped stop a bad situation before anyone got hurt,” Gulley said.
School safety officials and law enforcement responded quickly. The student was safely removed from class, and a gun and ammunition were located and taken from his backpack. A deputy
from the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department took over the investigation, and authorities are making sure there is no further danger to the school.
“Thanks to the students who spoke up and the staff who acted quickly, no one was harmed, and the situation was handled before it could escalate,” Gulley said.
“This is a reminder that if you see something concerning, say something. The students who reported this situation helped protect their school and classmates. If you ever hear or see
something that doesn’t seem right—whether online or in person—tell a teacher, school staff member, or trusted adult. Speaking up can save lives.”

The student should get an award for most stupid person of the week. Now, who owns the gun and ammo?????/
So, is this going to be treated as another “cry for help” like Jack Sawyer who made serious threats toward Fair Haven HS back in 2018? He was never held to legal account for what was considered to be a credible threat of a mass casualty event. No, Jack walked away, but it was the law-abiding gun owners of Vermont that had our rights restricted after Gov. Scott signed a package of new legislation in response. If we are not going to take these incidents seriously and hold the perpetrators directly responsible, then the law abiding should not be the ones paying the price.
Rich,
You claim incorrectly that Jack Sawyer was never held to legal account for his actions. In fact Sawyer was charged with misdemeanor criminal threatening and carrying a weapon. He was subsequently sent to a residential treatment facility out of state after being adjudicated a youthful offender. He was placed under the supervision of the Department of Corrections and Department for Children and Families until his 22nd birthday. Sawyer was also not permitted to possess firearms or enter the town of Fair Haven. He was prohibited from being on any school premises without prior written permission from the Department of Corrections and the Department for Children and Families.
Is that punishment enough? That’s is a debatable question, but to state that he was never held to legal account is not true.

I intended to convey that the punishment that Jack got was nothing compared to the abuse suffered by the law-abiding gun owners and prospective owners of Vermont…
So where did this idiot get the gun ??
Now that this happened, the leftist anti-guners will get on full display so get ready.
You mean to tell me that he ignored the signs with the gun in a red circle with a slash through it saying Gun Free Zone?
Gun control laws are passed to keep corrupt politicians in power and keep the law-abiding citizens from forcing them out. They do nothing to control criminals.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene: “Ultimately, the truth is it’s our Second Amendment rights, our right to bear arms, that protects Americans and gives us the ability to defend ourselves from a tyrannical government,” she said. “And I hate to use this language, but Democrats, they’re doing exactly what our Founders talked about when they gave us the precious rights that we have.”
Probably brought it to school for show and tell.
One important distinction not made in the article, was whether or not the student had possession of magazines (loaded or unloaded). A 9mm and 67 rounds of ammunition without a magazine would be no more quickly fired and reloaded than the average muzzleloader. Just sayin…inquiring minds (at least this one) want to know: we’re there any magazines?????
