Letter from the Publisher

Editor: I wish I had this letter writer’s chutzpah

A handwritten letter from a longtime Sustaining Subscriber postmarked December 4 says everything I wish I had the chutzpah to tell our readers.

“My voluntary subscription for 2025-2026 is enclosed.”

Yes, all Sustaining Subscriptions are voluntary. You can read VDC for free, although after January 1 all commenters will be required to subscribe at the new, higher rate of $132/year. Subscribe before January 1 and you’re locked in for a year of commenting at the current, lower rate of $108.

“The Vermont Daily Chronicle continues to be a vital part of the Vermont scene. You and your partners & staff are going the extra mile and it shows. I hope your readership and financial support is growing substantially alongside the continued excellence of the journalistic content.”

Yeah, about that…. Financial support has failed to keep track with our audience growth. VDC alone has grown its audience by more than 20% over last year’s record, The Burlington Daily News at an even greater rate, and our daily 11 AM call-in radio program Hot Off The Press on WDEV has increased our reach.

“Hopefully, the percentage of your readership who refuse to pay for the work that goes into VDC is diminishing. How selfish and dumb can they be to expect the Chronicle to be a part-time volunteer operation. Many of them are passionate in their beliefs, but don’t pay a single dime to support what they believe in.”

Preach it, brother!

Anyway, enough from my soap box. Hope you and your key people continue to be happy and fulfilled by what you are doing and that the financial side is good enough to keep you from being demoralized. Merry Christmas, {name withheld].

Thank you so much. Our morale here on the front lines is just fine. We have not grown weary in doing good and are hoping to reap support in this season. As plants need sunlight, newspapers need paying readers. Reader, if you value what we do, please help us grow…..

  1. Headline fixed:

Editor: I wish all had this letter writer’s gratitude

    – Thank you Guy & staff! My contribution is on its way. Merry Christmas and God bless.

  2. Maybe you could have other donation levels? Higher amounts with different names? Sadly much of Vermont expects so much for free, nothing is free.

Maybe have key stories or investigations or QUESTIONS!

Oh I like that one. So readers could pose questions for you to ask the governor or any body of interest, you record the question and answer.

This would fun, very interactive, kinda like only fans but for the pres, not for taking off your clothes and doing something stupid.

    Some sample questions.

Why can’t we have housing/shelter by right?

Why do we not tax porn? Why did porn become between familial members at the Covid lock down? Why do we allow this without taxation?

Who are the 10 people that set Vermonts agenda prior to session, who do they work for?

If you are a free person, why must you vote 100% with the party? Has the party ever told you how to vote?

If a man becomes a woman, how many times does she now have to have sex before the new woman gets pregnant? Can you give me a real life example from any time in history?

If a woman doesn’t have a baby inside her during pregnancy, how can a man or the state be liable for a child if she decides to have a baby? It was her choice, not anybody else’s why is anybody else liable? What are the ramifications of Vermont constitutional change that enforces this belief?

Oh, you could have some real fun with this.

Since the taxpayers gave you 4 billion more dollars than just a few years ago, how come you spent every single dollar and didn’t have a measly $2 million for flooding damage?

You could have reader volunteers ask the uestion if a certain amount was donated.

    Great fun.

You could orchestrate a debate where readers get to vote on and ask questions, not fall victim to the VPR narrative. So many wonderful opportunities to shed day light and raise money.

Even just questions like, is there any corruption in Vermont like what is going on in Wisconsin?

  3. Hi Guy – just sent in my annual subscription and didn’t take the time to thank you and your staff for all you do! I’m glad that one articulate subscriber expressed what I and presumably many subscribers think. I would be glad to get on my high horse about those who don’t pay for what they read but I’ve read Digger every year and don’t donate at all in spite of sending the occasional letter to the editor (still waiting to hear about the Balint campaign and whether she has returned the $999,999 donation from Bankman-Fried). Merry Christmas, Meg
