Derby man dies in fiery motorcycle crash

2022 highway deaths up about 40%

A 36-year-old man from Derby was killed during a motorcycle crash in Barton on Sunday, July 3, state police say.

The highway death was Vermont’s 41st this year. By comparison, 28 Vermonters died in crashes through June 27 of last year, state officials say. Last year’s totals were the highest in recent, previous years. It was the sixth fatality of a motorcycle operator – also a high number compared to recent years.

Authorities were alerted that two vehicles were fully engulfed in flames on Vermont Route 58 at around 11:50 AM.

According to state troopers, Tanner Flynn, 32, of Irasburg, was driving east when he crossed left of center around a right-hand corner and struck Eric Fillmore, 36, of Derby, who was traveling west.

Fillmore succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The road near the collision was closed for around four hours. Orleans Fire Department and Orleans EMS responded to the scene to assist state police.

Car towing boat catches fire – Shortly after 1 pm Friday, July 1, state troopers responded to a call about a Kia Sorento towing a boat completely engulfed in flames on I-91 South in St. Johnsbury.

The car had been operated by Joseph Authier of North Smithfield, Rhode Island. There were no injuries. The Kia Sorento was towed away as St. Johnsbury police helped direct traffic.

I-89 wrong way driver cited for DUI – At 2 AM on June 29, state police received several reports of a wrong way driver on Interstate 89 traveling south in the northbound lane from the area of Exit 13 through Exit 11 in the towns of South Burlington, Williston, Richmond and Bolton.

A trooper located a disabled vehicle at mile marker 69 in the southbound lane, matching the description of the car operated by the reported wrong way driver. Troopers identified the operator as Robert Elmergreen (39) of Hinesburg. While speaking with Elmergreen, Troopers observed several signs of impairment. Elmergreen was arrested for suspicion of DUI, processed, and released with a citation to appear in court July 19 for DUI-#1.
