Caught with 40 bags of drugs – cited, released, unconcerned

Brattleboro News video by Hank Poytras

By Guy Page

Hank “Planet Hank” Poytras and I on WDEV’s Hot Off The Press Thursday, October 16 discussed his startling video of a Brattleboro drug bust: startling because despite allegedly being found in possession of 40 bags of hard drugs, the couple was clearly only mildly concerned.

Hank publishes the Brattleboro News, a video series in which the trained videographer shoots live footage of police encounters, including drug busts.

40 bags is about 10 times the roughly four bag threshold between personal use and intent to sell, Hank said on Hot Off The Press. He noted that many drug users have no legal incentive to stop using drugs, despite the financial, social, and social services impact of chronic substance abuse.

In the video above, the woman waves and says ‘hi Mom’ into Hank’s camera. The man casually smokes a cigarette. They walk away with citations to appear in court.

Windham County is tied with two other counties for second-highest average annual overdose rate for 2022-24, with 15. Chittenden is first with 31.

  1. Is this the real reason to keep criminals out of prison in VT so as to protect criminals within the criminal system and on the streets, making lawyers & the AG record look good. Blood on a prison floor doesn’t look good.

GREENE COUNTY, N.C. A man serving time in prison for repeatedly raping a teenage girl was killed by a fellow inmate last weekend, according to officials. The death happened at Greene Correctional Institution in North Carolina. The Department of Adult Correction said Ernest Nichols, 60, was found dead on the floor beside his bunk in a dormitory on Sunday morning. Nichols was a physical education teacher
Inmate Wilbert Baldwin, 41, was charged with Nichols’ murder. He was given no bond and has been moved to Maury Correctional Institution. Baldwin is already serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree murder that happened in Richmond County back in 2007

  2. I have heard that a local police chief has stated police are only focused on bigger fish, that we (essentially) need illegal drugs in the area to support the cash flow/consumerist economy. VT has come to the point that we have taxed many businesses into closing/leaving or (I am sure but do not have proof) they are hiding gains so they aren’t taxed out of existence. So, the drugs will stay in VT as long as it keeps the well organized stacking of dominoes we call the economy moving in VT. What does this mean? If you have money in VT you are a target. Either by stealing for drug use or stealing by taxation. If you bought a house 3-4 years ago for 600k it’s now valued at 1 million, even if you did no improvements. The out of state ideals that have clearly ruined other states has come to Vermont. Having been here since ’86 I am appalled. The “easy button” is counted on for too many things, too many ways now. Topping it off VT has a spending problem. If you’re part of this problem we are watching you. The populace is paying attention and this bubble will burst, hopefully soon. You out of staters that come here to prey on VT’s peacefulness and tranquility will be run out in due time. Anyone in govt whom supports disarming the populace is in support of the illegal trades undermining the purity of VT folks, weed em out and vote em out. Our sons and daughters need to come back to VT to take the places of the corrupted and restore a sense of sanity (before retirement age, which is the new norm), or VT will continue fall to the steam roller of decadence. Some is healthy, what we have currently going on in our state is far past that definition. Take off your blinders people, it’s golden rule time. Not time for hopes and prayers, action. A true turning point.

  3. Re: …startling because despite allegedly being found in possession of 40 bags of hard drugs, the couple was clearly only mildly concerned.

And why should they be concerned our Attorney General is too busy wasting our taxpayer dollars suing Trump instead of doing her job getting criminals off the streets and putting criminals in jail.

  4. “He noted that many drug users have no legal incentive to stop using drugs, despite the financial, social, and social services impact of chronic substance abuse.”

By the same token: Those who fail to uphold the law fear no legal or career ending consequence to stop, willfully and knowingly, ignoring the detrimental impacts on our communities. Gee, I wonder why?
