The following letter was sent yesterday to Essex/Westford School Board members, in response to the discovery that a graphic novel about a transgender teen, containing pornographic images, is in circulation at the Essex High School/Middle School library.
Since the publication of a Vermont Daily Chronicle story, the Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s office has determined that “Gender Queer” does not sufficiently violate community guidelines to qualify as pornography. However, as the author below claims, the images in the book do include graphic presentations of oral sex and intercourse among minors.
Dear Essex School Board:
The above referenced title is on your library bookshelf and I’m requesting it be removed immediately. Your board & school owe the community answers regarding criteria for reading materials. To have such overt objectionable material reaching our children is unacceptable. The blurred images in the attached photos are not blurred in the book.
This title contains multiple graphic sexual images. Impressionable teens being able to read & view these including “blow jobs” “vaginal slime” & “masturbation” at school is breach of fundamental rights of parents to raise children as they see fit. Sexual morality education is parent/guardian responsibility, not activist teachers or school boards. We ask our educators to please stay in their lane.
‘Gender Queer’ would be categorized as child pornography, if there was a genre selection box to check. By allowing this book on your shelf, you’re demonstrating tacit approval of the material.

Of COURSE it’s pornographic…but the radicals of VT don’t care. It is part of their plan to destroy the state’s culture, implement social engineering, create division & chaos all for the “good” of eventually installing socialism/Communism & Marxism. A couple of weeks ago, the Mallet’s Bay Congregational “church” held a “Drag Queen Story Hour” for the community’s children: Grown men with serious mental health issues dressing up in an exaggerated, bizarre, & demeaning “likeness” of a woman and proclaiming their perversities in public to minors.
I heard a good time was had by all – from the parents who allow these degenerates to indoctrinate their impressionable little children. Wake up Vermont!!!
I find the State’s Attorney’s Office determination fascinating. I am sure that the language that was used in their determination is rooted in common law, however flawed, which adds to my fascination.
First I note that they did not deny that the book being in the school library violated community guidelines. It just did not do so sufficiently enough to have it legally classified as pornography in their opinion. Which begs the question, “Is it the purview of the State’s Attorney’s Office to make legal determinations or is it the courts”? Lastly, I do not know of any community that has published guidelines on what or what does not constitute pornography. How does the State’s Attorney’s Office know this and what constitutes a sufficient violation of it? Does the community itself have any say or is it just what someone thinks, wishes or wants to believe it is saying? Are we so free of any moral absolute that anything goes?
If I may make a general comment: I do not appreciate the name calling that I see by many respondents. It is detrimental to the argument, disrespectful, and unnecessary. A good argument will stand on its own without the vilification of those who oppose it. Civility is a virtue that we cannot afford to be without if we want to be heard.

Oh my Brad. Sure not my high school library’s collection! This is porn pure and simple. It doesn’t belong in a public school.
Get your kids OUT of the “schools” NOW! And everyone, every voter (if not register NOW) CALL and e-mail your state representative to enact Legislation NOW to give YOU control of the $15,000 to $19,000 per-pupil tuition to send YOUR kids to a school of YOUR choosing, far AWAY from these Union Hacks & Thugs pushing this CRAP. It is one thing not to discriminate against homosexuals and transgender people but must we educate all children about all the deviant choices. This does not belong in public schools.
Also to note: Not only is this book disgusting & pornographic, his very book is ANTI-female….it is clearly an attempt to acclimate & encourage males to find female’s bodies & bodily fluids repulsive and male’s bodies & what they produce highly attractive & preferable. It seems that the “determination” of pornography used by the State’s Attorneys office regarding this book might be different if the venue and circumstance the book was offered in was different.
This again sheds light on the core issue we face as citizens. We have empowered government agencies to the point of oppressive intrusion. In this case others presume to raise our kids and are indignant when we object. This is not what we thought we were buying. This is “ruling” in place of providing service. Let the money follow the kid so families can repossess their roles. Restructure “schools” to deliver a-la-cart services parents can then select to meet their need.
The idea is to break down societal norms and structures and replace them with arbitrarily imposed structuring.

My wife would say, “this is the world they live in now”….and she’s on the select board, school board and supervisory union board. Talk about family conflict. This is supposedly the “world they live in” because those in positions, such as you describe, interfere with parental influence and supervision, cultural preferences and religious experience. Soon as we rid ourselves of those supervisory influences, in education of our young, only then will the positive influences begin to reach our children. Only when parents and families have control over what is presented to our children will we gain our rightful place in their lives!
Having reached my 84th year and enjoyed 24 years of education, public and private, I fail to understand the reasoning to providing that sort of disgusting pornography to Elementary, Junior High and High School pupils. I can only assume that the faculty, administration and Vermont Board of Education finds such material titillating and wants to encourage our young children to experiment with sexual behaviors and activities that is beyond their maturity. For Shame!
When I sent my children to school (1980-1997) I didn’t get involved in their education, because I knew the teachers and administrators and I trusted them. Wake up people – you can’t do that anymore! It was also easier for us as parents to send our kids to school to be educated and disciplined while we went to work or pursued our careers. Well look at what not getting involved with our childrens’ education has done for our children, society and education system. It’s time for every one of us to now get involved; even as grandparents. We can still fix this, but sadly, not for the past three generations.
Banning books benefits no one. You don’t like this book, you don’t like that book. Where does it end?
It’s not banning books from society, but drawing the line at pornography in schools. Children have innocence that is codified in their biology. It is wholly inappropriate to encourage them to consider sex at an age they can barely write legibly, clean their rooms, can’t drive cars, can’t own guns, can’t vote, but can have sex and potentially a child? I can’t believe this has to be explained.

Hi Heidi, I agree with you in general, but surely there are some books you wouldn’t let your children (if you have them) read at a certain age. This is definitely pornography, and it is criminal to show it to children. I have a child and I let him watch pretty much anything. He reads reviews of any movie he wants to watch and decides for himself if it’ll disturb him and he makes very good decisions. Many parents would disagree with my choice on this but it has worked fine for us.
A lot of educational moments can happen, for example, watching SNL. Maybe they use some sexual reference he hasn’t heard of, he asks “what’s that” and I say, oh, I don’t want to talk about it, and he says, “Fine, I’ll google it then.” Then I say Ok, ok, I’ll just tell you. And that’s the end of it. It’s stuff they’re going to talk about at school anyway. I was driving him and a friend around last year and the friend taught him the word “queef”. There’s not much you can do about it and it doesn’t bother me in the least. I don’t have any hangups about any sexuality between any number and gender of people, as long as it’s all consenting adult human beings, or consenting underage humans with other consenting underage humans, and I don’t care if my kid learns about it from other kids, from TV, from me…BUT FROM OTHER ADULTS IN THIS CREEPY WAY IS NOT EVER OK.

In Vermont, minors under the age of 17 are not allowed to view or purchase R-rated movies in stores or movie theaters without their parent’s or guardian’s permission. Why should school books be treated differently? Are you confident they’d allow straight sex scenes in public schools? Under the guise of being LGBTQ, they allow porn in public schools? Is it a good idea to offer explicit content in public schools without parents’ consent or knowledge? The sexually explicit book in question are prohibited by Vermont statutes. The idea that children have unrestricted access to such sexual content in school is morbid and disgusting.

My son hasn’t been going to public school because they have failed in other ways but this makes me really not want him to go back. I wonder if Governor Phil Scott has been informed? I thought it was interesting that in South Carolina, the governor involved himself when he was made aware of this book in school libraries. He also notified law enforcement.

I don’t know what the author was thinking when he or she wrote and illustrated the book. I don’t know how a publisher even agreed to publish this. This isn’t actually about parents’ rights but about the law. Child pornography is against the law throughout the United States and a number of other countries. It does not matter if they are photographic images, words only, or, in this case, graphic novel illustrations. I cannot believe the author is so clueless as to be unaware a book like this is unpublishable. If he or she had written a straight-up memoir marketed for adults, there would be little controversy. It is the fact it is a graphic novel, which by definition is a genre for children and adolescents, that is the issue. ALL bookstores, brick-and-mortar and online, and ALL libraries need to pull the book from circulation. Likewise the publisher needs to withdraw the book, no doubt a moneymaker, but still illegal as child porn, and all copies destroyed. Lest demand skyrockets in such an event, it should illegal to sell it on the secondary market as well.
