With 14 other Republican governors in Eagle Pass, Texas supporting Gov. Greg Abbott’s efforts to stop what he calls an immigrant invasion on the Southern border, Vermont Governor Phil Scott has co-authored an op-ed with Connecticut Democrat Governor Ned Lamont calling on Congress to pass controversial border legislation.
“For the good of the nation, it’s time to get behind the bipartisan immigration deal that is making its way through Congress,” the op-ed published shortly after noon today on Newsweek.com begins.
“If we were governors in that region, we’d be frustrated and exhausted by the failure of the federal government too,” the pair of New England governors say in the commentary headlined, “Take It From Two Governors: The Time for Immigration Reform Is Now.”
Critics of the border bill – including almost all conservative Republicans in Congress – say the bill’s loopholes will institutionalize a porous border. According to senators quoted in Center Square news reports, the bill:
- Requires the Department of Homeland Security to close the border entirely if border agents have an average of 5,000 or more encounters in a week.
- Codifies catch-and-release under so-called ‘alternatives to detention’ for any alien who says they intend to apply for asylum or another protection.
- Gives immediate work permits to everyone who says they want asylum, as long as they pass an initial screening.
- Grants Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas the ability to grant asylum claims without going through immigration court.
Scott took heat last week when he and only one other GOP governor (the other from Alaska) refused to sign a letter of support for Abbott.
But Scott and Lamont express trust in Biden to close the border when necessary.
“The agreement currently being crafted would empower any president to shut down the border when necessary. President Biden has pledged to use this new power on day one to shut down and secure the border. And that is exactly what is necessary—a full reset of the border—to secure it. And if he doesn’t, he has said it’s on him.”
Gov. Scott took heat last week for being one of only two GOP governors to not sign a letter of support for Abbott. Scott’s spokesperson said Scott doesn’t sign any Republican Governor Association letters.

Just what would be the outcome if Texas governor greg abbott sent a mere 10 busloads of border jumpers and left them in front of the Pavillion Office Bldg.? Beside the awesome d/p photo-op, that’s many millions of Vermont taxpayer dollars to house, feed and otherwise entertain 400 illegals. Both scott and the legislature cannot deal with the burgeoning homeless in Vermont as it is, yet he “thinks” the current senate bill allowing almost unchecked illegal immigration is somehow okay? Sorry phil, this is a Ukrainian aid bill not subtly disguised as something to fix the border. scott should be very familiar with the ruse of disguised legislation, as d/p politicians have been pulling it off in Vermont for decades.

You are the only Republican Governor in America who does not support Texas and their Constitutional Guarantee to defend themselves and America.
You were the only Republican Governor in America who did not sign the letter condemning Biden for the border crises.
You support abortion to the moment of Birth.
You support the sexual, chemical, psychological and physical destruction of children.
You support criminal charges against every Parent and Health Care worker that would fight to protect the children.

Where’s the division?
Vermont voted against Trump by the highest margin in the country, the Gov was reelected with 71% of the vote, Welch beat Malloy with 66% of the vote, and Balint, an openly gay mom, won with over 62% of the vote. Democrats now have a supermajority in the Vermont Legislature.
Rather than the dysfunctional division plaguing the rest of the country, Vermont seems to have reached a healthy bipartisan consensus. That’s why Scott is so popular and why Trump is generally despised. The fact that a handful of disgruntled people post low-information rants here doesn’t change that.

From what I’ve heard the boarder closeure triggers when the daily total of illegals reaches 5000. 5000×365=1,825,000 a year before Biden or Mayorkas have to close the boarder. Only 1,825,000 ? Oh I forgot, this year is a leap year, 1, 830,000. Hey, no problem ! We can handle that right here in Vermont, right Gov. ? Maybe even in Berlin ?
It has to average 5k/day for 7 consecutive calander days in order to take action (which isn’t really action) or exceed 8,500 in one day. These are only the ones they count at port of entries, forget about those that go around.

Thank God the Ukraine bill is dead on arrival. If the president really wanted to do something about the invasion he has the power and he would. But he doesn’t want to and he won’t. He caused this, or more accurately is the figurehead representing those that instituted it. It is purposeful. Demographic destiny is not a right wing theory, it is a left wing conspiracy against the soveintry of our country which they hate in order to degrade our rights as citizens, further empower selected politicians and secure votes.

Gentlemen- the assumption that phil scott is anything close to a conservative should have been dispelled in 2018- during scott’s first term. scott never claimed to be anything other than a moderate. phil scott serves as a placeholder, providing some restraint upon the legislative branch- until a strong d/p candidate emerges to claim the office. Then it is indeed over for the Republic. scott may indeed be a political eunuch- but he is the best Vermont’s dwindling Republican Party can muster to counter the scourge of socialism. You nor I will live to see a conservative majority in Vermont politics, those days are over. The notion that a wave of conservative politicians might hold sway under the golden dome- or on the 5th floor of the Pavillion is delusional. What bernie sanders started in 1982 is here to stay and metastasize for generations to come.
Perhaps this November 4th, Vermont’s apathetic voter will turn out and reduce the super-majority to a majority- but don’t count on it- as 2020 election law changes have tipped the balance of power to the majority party. This is not the first time that Gov. Scott supported legislation that he did not read. Or if he did read it, then he obviously doesn’t like Vermonters.
Guy did a good job of highlighting some major problems with this bill. Here’s a similar synopsis from the Federation for American Immigration Reform..
In reality, the bill: (1) leaves existing law in place, under which the Biden Administration has been (illegally) releasing illegal aliens encountered at the border; (2) does nothing to stop the President’s illegal use of parole; (3) creates a whole new, “claim-and-release” process for asylum-seekers that actually encourages asylum abuse; (4) provides limited expulsion authority for a temporary period of time and exempts huge swaths of illegal migrants; and (5) appropriates billions of dollars to NGOs and Homeland Security to continue the administration’s open-borders policies.

Phil Scott really should pull a Jeffords and give the Dems an honest progressive trifecta. The Republicans who support Scott can follow him and the remnants of the Republican party can rebuild when the state collapses from wokeness, debt, taxes, and crime.
This is a person that boasted of voting for Biden. Threw law abiding Vermont gun owners under the bus to to appease Chittenden county progressives. Refuses to support manufacturing industry as we further descend into a unskilled, service base economy. Refuses to admonish the Secretary of Labor for encouraging VOSHA inspectors to issue unwarranted, bankrupting fines to accident-free, small businesses. Allows ANR to fine family farms into bankruptcy for managing drainage and open burns of lumber debris.
Yet with this and much, much more, Vermont’s Republican committee can not field an electable candidate.

This bill is a joke from the administration so they can say in debates look we tried to fix it and they didn’t. Why does a 118 billion border security bill include only 20 for CBP but has 60 for Ukraine and 14 for Israel? What do either of them do with border security? Biden could order the border closed today but he won’t too many democrat voters coming across.

A sad and pathetic comment — the weakest and ugliest of all responses to this story. When reason, decency, logic, and intelligence fail, some people resort to name calling and mud slinging. If this is meant to sway others to your point of view (if indeed there is a point), you may want to give it some thought and try again.

And I think it’s time for you to comprehend the concept of free speech, and as a matter of FACT, the Vermont Constitution supports it voraciously: “That the people have a right to freedom of speech, and of writing and publishing their sentiments…….and therefore the freedom of the press should not be restrained”.
