Bigamy charge, school threat, swatting, car arson

On May 8 state police received a bigamy complaint in Arlington. Police found Robert Karney, 59 of Arlington was still married to a female in Louisiana while getting married to another female in Arlington in April. Karney was cited to appear in court to on the charge of Bigamy.

School threat – state police were contacted May 20 by staff at Derby Junior High School about an alleged threat made to the school by a student. State police initiated a response coordinating with school officials and community resources.

State police said Saturday it does not appear to be a credible threat. However, investigation is ongoing and parents and community members can expect to see an increased police present at the school on Monday May 23.

Swatting – at 1:30 pm Saturday May 21, state police received a 911 call from an unknown individual claiming that a family member was actively shooting another individual inside their residence located at 52 Christian Hill Road in the town of Bethel. Police units arrived at this residence and through investigation it was determined that the incident did not occur.

The incident is being labeled as a “Swatting” call or a 911 call to deceive law enforcement. The homeowners at 52 Christian Hill Road were home and cooperated with police investigation.

The victim has been identified as Douglas Marshall, 43. The investigation into this incident will remain ongoing.

Car arson – Someone set a Burlington resident’s car on fire at 5 am May 20.

A car belonging to Tyrone Biggs, 53, of Burlington was set afire in a St. Paul Street parking lot. The fire is the result of direct human involvement by a person intentionally setting the vehicle on fire, police say.

Man strikes woman, takes car – 7:45 AM May 19 state police received a report of an assault and stolen vehicle from the area of Highbridge Road in Georgia. Police say Philip Chicoine, 56, Georgia was involved in a dispute that became physical shortly after leaving his home.

The altercation resulted in Chicoine striking the victim, removing her from the vehicle and then taking her car. Chicoine later agreed to meet with troopers, was brought before a judge, and released on conditions.

Drunk driver crosses lawns, nearly hits people – At 10:30 pm May 21, state police learned of a male causing a disturbance on Avenue A in St. Johnsbury. Troopers said Derek Bristol, 24, of St had, while impaired, driven his motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner across people’s yards and almost hitting multiple persons.

At the time of arrest Bristol attempted to flee on foot, and then fought with troopers. He was brought to the St. Johnsbury VSP Barracks, and was jailed and cited to appear in court.
