WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Saturday condemned President Donald Trump’s unilateral military action against Venezuela as illegal and unconstitutional, warning that it violates international law, endangers global security and usurps Congress’ exclusive authority to declare war. Sanders called on Congress to immediately pass a War Powers resolution to end the operation.
Donald Trump has, once again, shown his contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law. The President of the United States does NOT have the right to unilaterally take this country to war, even against a corrupt and brutal dictator like Maduro. The United States does NOT have the right, as Trump stated this morning, to “run” Venezuela. Congress must immediately pass a War Powers resolution to end this illegal military operation and reassert its constitutional responsibilities.
Trump’s attack on Venezuela will make the United States and the world less safe. This brazen violation of international law gives a green light to any nation on earth that may wish to attack another country to seize their resources or change their governments. This is the horrific logic of force that Putin used to justify his brutal attack on Ukraine.
Trump and his administration have often said they want to revive the Monroe Doctrine, claiming the United States has the right to dominate the affairs of the hemisphere. They have spoken openly about controlling Venezuela’s oil reserves, the largest in the world. This is rank imperialism. It recalls the darkest chapters of U.S. interventions in Latin America, which have left a terrible legacy. It will and should be condemned by the democratic world.
Trump campaigned for president on an “America First” platform. He claimed to be the “peace candidate.” At a time when 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, when our healthcare system is collapsing, when people cannot afford housing and when AI threatens millions of jobs, it is time for the president to focus on the crises facing this country and end this military adventurism abroad. Trump is failing in his job to “run” the United States. He should not be trying to “run” Venezuela.

Bernie, I see no distress in Maduros face, in fact he almost looks relieved. Almost as if he is glad that Trump has saved him from his own people. I wonder if Trump will try to claim the $25,000,000 bounty that Biden placed on Maduro several years ago.
And Bernie, if Trump could get rid of Putin in four hours, would you be against that too?
Yes, let’s instead allow the USA to continue to placate brutal dictators, terrorists, & cartels that are responsible for the murder of hundreds of thousands of American citizens, and disregard the inhuman & extremist regimes that violate the most basic of human rights, mostly of females.

Maduro was indicted in 2020 by a constitutionally appointed grand jury. Then came Joe, not wanting to take anything away from Hunter, and nothing happened. I guess the Bidens take care of their own.

All I see here is the same people over and over again beating up on Bernie without discussing the merits of his claim that a US president cannot declare war without Congressional authorization. It appears it’s happened quite a few times before now, but what if a president AOC decides to invade Belarus on a whim, without Congressional authorization, is that something you think is OK?
Sorry Bob, but the War Powers Resolution, for one, allows the POTUS to use MILTARY FORCE without any Congressional approval or consensus for a minimum period of 90 days for a number of justifications – which can be extended.
Whoops! Looks as though CNN & MSNBC & PBS, etc. have all “forgotten” to include that authority within their “impartial” reporting of this very justifiable offensive!
And the difference between Trump and GOD-forbid an AOC presidency – is that Trump’s interests & intent is to protect the USA, while AOC’s is to decimate & dismantle as all Communists have done throughout history.
I don’t recall Obama getting Congressional authorization for Libya.

I’m totally in support of the actions made by our President, and the Armed forces action, including the Law enforcement.
I support the Don-roe doctrine, as it’s saying, we no longer allow dictators to threaten its people, or the Americas!
China, Russia, Iran…take notice…
No kings, clearly should be proud… I don’t want a senator from my state supporting a dictator, drug runner.
The apparent benefits of this action:
1. Severe weakening of the Maduro cartel regime.
2. Severe weakening of the Cuban Communist regime.
3. Choking off the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which took Venezuelan oil to sell for cash.
4. Leaving the Chinese Communist Party without reliable oil from Venezuela
and Iran.
