ATV rider, pedestrian die in crashes

Trooper wrecks cruiser, police seek speeding VW

A 22-year-old man from Franklin was killed during an ATV crash in Highgate Sunday afternoon.

Authorities were notified that Logan Labelle was found underneath an overturned ATV in a sandpit between Frontage Road and Airport Road at around 2:40 p.m.

Police say Labelle had been operating a Polaris Sportsman ATV in the sandpit. The ATV overturned on a steep bank, causing fatal injuries.

Police are still investigating this crash. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is being encouraged to call 802-524-5993.

Pedestrian killed on Shelburne Rd. – On Saturday, August 5, after 10 PM, a pedestrian died after he was struck by a motor on Shelburne Road in Shelburne. Edwin Mejia, 44, of Shelburne was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Mejia was struck near the intersection with Cynosure Drive by a northbound Jeep Cherokee driven by William Callahan, 75, of Burlington, police say. Mejia was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Trooper wrecks cruiser – A state trooper was involved in a single-vehicle wreck of his cruiser in St. Johnsbury on Friday night.

The crash took place on Lackie Hill Road and Spaulding Road at around 10:30 p.m. Police say during his response to a call, Trooper Griffin Pearson, 30, Waterford lost control of his State Police cruiser.

The vehicle left the road and rolled over. Trooper Pearson was able to extricate himself from the cruiser and was helped by local residents. He was transported to NVRH for minor injuries sustained in the crash.

Members of the Calex ambulance service responded to the scene and the State Police would like to thank the community members that assisted Trooper Pearson before they arrived on the scene.

VW 113 MPH in 50 MPH zone – At about 7 pm Sunday evening, August 6, state troopers saw a Volkswagen sedan (pictured) traveling south on Rte. 100 in Newport Center at 113 MPH in a 50 MPH zone. 

A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle negligently throttled past another southbound car on a crest of a hill, troopers say. The sedan is believed to be newer model, darker colored – possibly grey, Volkswagen Jetta. The operator was a white male appearing to be in or around his 20’s.
