Lieutenant Governor Rodgers and the Office of the Health Care Advocate (HCA) are sharing an affordability win for Vermonters on Medicare.
Due to action in recent budget bills, beginning January 1, 2026, more Vermonters on Medicare will qualify for help paying for health insurance premiums and cost-sharing.
Because of this policy change, an estimated 14,322 additional Vermonters will become newly eligible for Medicare Savings Programs—allowing each of them to keep $2,435 more per year in their pockets and enjoy additional cost-saving benefits.
You can learn more about Medicare Savings Programs here.
More Vermonters on Medicare can now get help paying for premiums and other out-of-pocket health care costs. Income limits for Medicare Savings Programs have increased, so more people may qualify — even if you’re working. If you qualify for a Medicare Savings Program, you also automatically qualify for a free federal prescription drug program. This can lower your Medicare Part D premium and reduce prescription co-pays.
The 2026 maximum income level for Medicare Savings Programs:
- $2,685 per month for individuals
- $3,645 per month for couples
If you have questions about your options, contact the Office of the Health Care Advocate for free, confidential help at 1-800-917-7787.
The Office of the Health Care Advocate is a project of Vermont Legal Aid (www.vtlegalaid.org) and helps any Vermonter with health care issues.

It is NOT for SS incomes That was your money held by the Government. When the Cola kicked in, it took a huge bit out of SS. Use to get a basic raise that inflation didn’t cover. The people that control Medicare for SS people took about 90% of any increase for Medicare. Mentioning the three past years my increase was in the lower $20 a month. This is manipulated by the CPI that groups of purchasing as an average. Using an example. Groceries went up well over the inflation rate, (for illustration say 40%) yet also listed in the CPI are prices of autos (about 3%) Averaging the two that’s 21.5%. However the increase according to the CPI Groceries is 2.7%. They use some factious number to refer to from the previous month. Rogers doesn’t know what he” talking about, like he’s done his homework (at a local school). My grocery bill (very basic increased average $30 each time and I don’t buy much, just basic needs. Eat out forget it, never did anyhow. Am in an area wherein I don’t have to travel much, maybe 40 miles a week. Can’t contact the Representatives, they don’t have a clue. Medicare needs reform. Illegals are on it without paying into it. Note on your SS form for the next year’s payments, they call it a GOVERNMENT BENEFIT. That money as confiscated from me, for my RETIREMENT BS. Thanks Bernie, you don’;t want any SS payments getting interest So much for AL Gore’s locked box, not as long as Bernie et al is around. Rogers is a person in Gov that doesn’t have a clue about economic.s. People could write a book individually about this. The CPI doesn’t include VT property taxes.
What fund is making up the cost to run this program??????
