Bernie Sanders tries to leave ABC interview after question about AOC running for Schumer seat

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont appears to have surprised ABC reporter Jonathan Karl with his angry refusal to answer a straight question about Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D/P Queens/Bronx, NY) running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

In a March 23 interview aired on ABC This Week, the reporter for the typically ‘friendly’ ABC was doing a sit-down with Sanders before the Progressive icon spoke Friday before a big crowd in Denver. Karl couldn’t resist asking Sanders the big, tough question: would he back longtime Progressive Caucus protege Ocasio-Ortez in a primary run against the embattled Schumer, who many Progressives say should have fought harder against the Republican-approved budget continuing resolution?

Bernie responded by calling it a ‘Nonsense’ question and getting up to leave. He was then coaxed back into the chair only after Karl promised to ask one more question – about a future presidential run.

The interview was going just fine until Karl did what good reporters are supposed to do – ask the question everyone else is afraid to ask, because it’s both sensitive and important. Would Bernie back AOC – with whom he has shared pancake breakfasts in Burlington as her highest profile political examplar and mentor – or fellow incumbent Democrat and Brooklyn native Schumer.

Watch the video, or read the (excerpted) transcript, both as published by Breitbart:

JONATHAN KARL: OK, you’re out there with the AOC today.

SANDERS: Yes.

KARL: Do you see her as a future of the progressive –

SANDERS: We have one of the untold stories –

KARL: Yes.

SANDERS: Of what’s going on in current American politics, is that in the House of Representatives, you have dozens and dozens of strong, smart, disciplined, hard-working young people in the Progressive Caucus. And, you know, way back when, when I first came to the Congress in the House, I helped form the Progressive Caucus. We had five people in it at that time. Now they have close to 100. So, you got a whole lot of good people. Alexandria is extraordinary. I am so impressed by her work in Congress and her – just, she inspires young people all over the country.

KARL: Would you like to see her join you in the Senate?

SANDERS: I – right now we have, as I said, just a whole lot of people in the Congress. OK, Jonathan, thanks.

KARL: Wait, I got one more – I got one more. This is an important –

SANDERS: No, I asked you –

KARL: OK.

SANDERS: No, you want to do nonsense. Do nonsense.

KARL: No.

SANDERS: I don’t want to talk about inside the beltway stuff. I got 32,000 people –

KARL: I was just asking you about AOC because she was out there with you.

SANDERS: Well, you know, fine, but I don’t want to talk about this – what was the last question?

KARL: I was just going to ask you one more question about you. I mean, that’s all. I was – it was literally your last –

SANDERS: All right, what – what is your question?

KARL: Well, I mean, it’s easier if you’re sitting. I mean, I want to ask you about your future. This is the biggest crowd. You said – you ran for president twice. This is the biggest crowd you’ve ever seen. Are we going to see you run again? What’s your, what’s your future?

SANDERS: No, right now I’m very proud that the people of the state of Vermont sent me back to the Senate with 63 percent of the vote.

KARL: Yes.

SANDERS: Right now I’m Vermont’s senator. That’s what I do. And I’m very happy to do it. I am 83 years of age. So – and I’m tired.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KARL: All right, our thanks to Senator Sanders for taking the time to talk to us and for letting us get that last question in.

  1. Just one more amusing element of the democrats’ current downfall is the fact that Schumer’s term does not end until January 2029. As far as any future presidential aspirations for Bernie, it is still fresh in his mind how the democrats held a figurative gun to his head to deter that ambition, while funneling cash to him through a book deal.

  2. Please Bernie just go away..Vermont doesn’t need you..The U.S. doesn’t need you.. your message was (and is) worn out and you are also. Go retire in one of your many fuel oil guzzling mansions and just fade away. You are irrelevant. PLEASE!

    • I call the man Bernie the Blamer. agree he does not represent the majoirty of vermonters. his supporter are Burlington, Brattleboro (aka Mass north) and Montpelier. he is such a hypocrite, i.e. blaming big pharma for everthing but he chokes when a jourlanist calls him out for being on of the biggest receipinents of pharma campaign funding. he wont make it to the end of his term.

  3. Close enough.
Granted, Bernie is a senator from Vermont. But it’s been a long time since he was Vermont’s senator. He no longer represents Vermonters. He’s a place holder. He’s the self anointed leader of the communist party in the United States, and I’m sure that even that bunch of misguided creeps will get weary of him soon. Good time to resign and retire, Bernie. Preferably out of state…

  4. Notice Bernie included the media as a branch holding power in our government. Since when?

    • It must be “buried” in the Constitution somewhere about the 4th branch of government being the media (oh! the freedom of the press, the first amendment)!! Looks as if Bernie will need a lesson in the Constitution. Six years can’t go by fast enough.

  5. His Coney Island shell game:

    he’s a communist,
    masquerading as a socialist ,
hiding under the skirt of the democratic party.
    he’s a millionaire
    scheming to be a billionaire
while plotting to become an Oligarchinaire

  6. Why can Bernie not look Johnathan Karl in the eye. He looks everywhere else, if he cannot look someone win the eye you cannot trust him. What fraud.

  7. Same old lame political talking points.
He talks in circles and needs to retire.
We need representatives that have signed paychecks not grifted off the taxpayers all of their adult life.

  8. You could pull out videos of this slug from 50 years ago and his narrative will be the same. It’s worked well for him and the people of Vermont that support him haven’t gotten any smarter either. Some things never change.

  9. Bernie is getting called out by once dedicated supporters. Rumblings the attendees of his current tour with AOC are paid, some admitting they are paid, and gps data showing attendee cell phones ping on other sponsored “organic” grass roots rallys over the past two years? Tsk Tsk

On the other side of the controlled operations, conservative social media influencers caught taking a page from the liberals – a bunch of them cut and pasted identical posts about stopping soda pop being purchased on EBT cards?

It appears the US corporations, NGO’s and non-profiteers are ramping up investments. They are throwing big money around to ensure their brands and products remain solvent and unscathed. The influencer liars are obliging by throwing their reputations and their brands into the toilet for the right price. Hence, the Epstein binder-gate dog and pony show and the Daily Mail sinking like a stone.

No honor among thieves and reprobates.

  10. Bernie is nothing but a leftover Marxist has been; a tired old time Bolshevik who loves to hear himself rant but hasn’t thought or said anything new or insightful in his entire adult life. He just continues to regurgitate the same rubbish, ad nauseam. Why anyone pays any attention him, even worse votes for him, says volumes about the intelligence level of the general population, none of it good.

  11. what a dolt.
there’s been an oligarchy surrounding our government
    for 250 years…..
he could have been making a buck off this 50 years ago.

  12. I want to know how many millions Bernie made from pharmaceutical companies??? You are a socialist Bernie and you are supposed to share your wealth but instead you own multiple properties and have millions. You love the power you have and won’t give it up. You are as corrupt as the other progressives and you will not admit that the most important issues as in immigration and deporting violent criminals and economy and DOGE because they are getting rid of the fraud waste and abuse and not letting it drive this country into bankruptcy!!!! You would let this country file bankruptcy wouldn’t you Bernie!!! You hate this country too like the AOC and the other progressives. The moderate democrats lost control years ago. Vermonters need to wake up to the fact that this country is in tough shape financially and that DOGE is helping the President to regain its wealth. President Trump is good and Bernie is bad in the long run for Vermont and America and to start voting for Republicans exclusively.
