Human Rights, Reconciliation Boards seek more public money

The Vermont Human Rights Commission members at a recent staff and volunteer retreat

By Michael Bielawski

Vermont’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the state’s Human Rights Commission are asking for additional taxpayer funds. The former wants money to hire a “Care Coordinator” and “Communications/Marketing Consultant” while the latter says they are overwhelmed and need several additional staff.

“truth-telling” about “genocidal trauma”

The Commission’s Care Coordinator position must oversee that all staff, volunteers, and their committee be trained in “trauma-informed practices with cultural humility, specifically tailored to support impacted community members,” states the job description in an email to VDC.

He or she will oversee a “truth-telling process” to take place next year.

“This role is integral to the VTRC’s mission of providing equitable and compassionate care during the truth-telling process, addressing the generational and genocidal trauma experienced by communities,” it says.

The new coordinator must “Attend and execute care protocol for 5 large-scale, in-person, all-day truth-telling events and 2 virtual truth-telling events.” These events will take place between June and October of 2025.

The candidate must also have, “Alignment with VTRC’s mission & understanding of generational & genocidal trauma.” The VTRC Strategic Plan includes to, “document institutional, structural, and systemic discrimination in Vermont and identify potential actions that can be taken by the state to repair the damage caused by this harm.”

Communications Consultant

The Commission’s other posting says this consultant will focus on public relations. They will “develop and implement effective messaging strategies and outreach to diverse organizations, communities, and individuals.

It continues, “They will also assist in creating positive media experiences, ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations involved in this work, and enhancing our social media, email outreach, and website presence.”

It is expected to cost $40,000 – $50,000 for each of these new positions.

Transparency controversy

The organization asked lawmakers during this past legislative session for no media access for some subcommittee meetings. Lawmakers rejected the proposal.

“A spokesperson for the Vermont press said full transparency is required because the Truth and Reconciliation Commission is involved in state policy work, including the possibility of requiring reparations payments to minorities,” said a VDC report.

Human Rights Commission wants money

The Vermont Human Rights Commission is claiming that they are being overwhelmed with cases and that they need more public support. Michele Olvera, a legal counsel with the Commission, told VTDigger that some cases are taking up to two years to resolve.

They are asking for about $900,000 in new funding, roughly doubling their existing annual budget. The new positions this money would be for include an intake specialist, three new investigators, a communications person, a paralegal, a part-time social worker, and a part-time mediator.

The Commission was set up in 1987 to advocate for various human rights protections such as providing representation for renters while in court for housing disputes.

Some public cry foul

On X, some of the public has been skeptical of new funds for the Human Rights Commission. @Charles_Root wrote on X, “More cases” Translation: More people seeking victimhood.”

@VTDeservesMore wrote, “Is there a value to a human rights commission in VT?”

When VDC wrote a story in December when the Commission was also asking for money, a commenter on X alleged that they are biased in selecting who to help.

@jonMatthei wrote, “why they dont do a damn thing for locals. Had a run in with them, but because the individual I brought to them for help wasnt of color (just mentally ill) nor a relative of Ginny Lyons, they make excuses to avoid helping. JOKERS just like VT aclu. Pathetic”

  1. Of course they want MORE taxpayer $. Why doesn’t Montpelier get it’s own printing presses and just print $ like the govt?

  2. A very wise old Vermonter told me
“when you build a monster, you must feed that monster”

This is a small monster that requires slaying before it grows.

  3. I fully realize this is a rhetorical question, but does this include safety and protection for the vulnerable population of unborn babies?

  4. End them both and the NAACP. Remember when the NAACP fought a NY drug dealer’s prosecution when caught in Rutland with an ungodly amount of heroin? The guy was in a taxi cab. The claimed racial profiling and in the end, not only was the dealer free, the Rutland PD had to pay HIM. This is what taxpayers are being bilked for. I’m pretty sure very few want to be paying for scumbag legal battles. That’s basically what the NAACP has become. These others function somewhat similarly by using tax dollars to go after VT small businesses and landlords on behalf on the non-working population. A REAL discrimination case doesn’t need government representation; a lawyer will take those on pro bono. The issue is, very few have merit.

    • That was Bennington, it 11 years ago and I only responded to say congratulations on getting literally every detail of that story wrong. Lots of examples to pick from like the DEI woman who took money and ran in Burlington or when Rutland hired a DEI superintendent and compared teachers to pedophile priests but you took the one time that the cops were being racist. Good for you, I wish that I could be as confidently incorrect as the other posters here.

    • The point of the story is spot on and of course they were being “racist” Chris. Every time a drug dealer is arrested and is also black, it’s racism. We all know that now. Ask Stephanie Seguino. Libs are a joke.

  5. Amen, cathyhoyt2000! Excellent question.

And many of those who support abortion claim it is a “human right.” How about the right to life for the humans still in their mother’s womb?

    https://www.liveaction.org/news/amnesty-international-abortionists-human-rights/

How about the genocidal trauma being inflicted upon Black people in the United States through the eugenic murder of their babies? The abortion rate for Black babies in the United States is double the birth rate! For every Black baby born in America, one baby has been killed.

  6. Grifters gotta grift! What did the Human Rights Commission do during Culling-19 when basic civil liberties were trampled over with impunity? No human rights upheld then. When MANDATED innoculation forced regardless of religious freedom or points of personal priviledge. They are totally silent and complicit when it comes to biolab mystery juices, weapons of mass destruction, and real crimes against humanity.

The irony of Truth and Reconciliation and Human Rights – nothing could be further from the Truth. They are liars, dividers, and government sponsored globlist despots. Time to save taxpayer money and defund all commissions per the Chevron decision ruled by the U.S. Supreme Court – they have no authority and they are illegal. Pack up your cubicles and hit the bricks – you’re fired!

  7. Absolutely NO MORE money for them! In fact they shouldn’t even get ANY taxpayer funds. If they’re so passionate about what they’re doing, they can have fundraisers and hit up all the liberals in the state that support this crap. Leave the taxpayers alone who can’t afford the property taxes and groceries.

  8. Lets just all take off those lenses that see people we do not know as ‘other’ — and remember how Vermont had to survive until relatively recently: Live and let live, and help your neighbor.
Everything else is divide and conquer, and if you aren’t asking who benefits (qui bono) and following then money then you truly ARE a victim of the victimizers in chief.

If I look at you…any of you… I see a person who is more or less spiritual (quotiant) and nothing else. You are more light or you are more dark. I don’t judge you for that, but do try to see you as the best that you can be, not driven by fear of my own dark imaginings… I find that my thoughts tend to color how I see people so I curate them, carefully…daily, and make sure what I see and feel is what I me myself and I, see and feel and isnt being spoon fed through social media or faux news… just sayin’… your fear is not my fear. You idiosyncrisies are not scary to me… and its not up to me to judge. That’s in God’s hands now and forever.
Thankfully, if you display gentleness, kindness, patience, self-control, endurance, joy and peace… that’s all I need to know… and I look to curate those same functions of Spirit in myself…
How about dropping the labels until New Years and seeing if it changes your world view…and turn off the programming you are listening to…its literally: programming you how to think and feel.

  9. Our civil and criminal courts are supposed to be the government system that steps in when people treat each other unfairly. The human rights commission has always been a redundant and LEFT-BIASED way of dealing with thorny issues of human relations, putting people with a social worker and activist mentality in place where there should be a judge and/or jury. Years ago they ruled against a family who owned an inn who hosted weddings, who because of their deep Catholic faith declined to host and PARTICIPATE IN a same-sex wedding and were found liable by the HRC. Subsequent court rulings in other jurisdictions such as with the Colorado cake baker sided with First Amendment religious protections. The HRC decision in that case was flawed since it determined that the discrimination was based on orientation. The discrimination was based on the EVENT and being forced to participate in it, NOT on the individual’s sexual orientation. DEFUND this travesty.
