Yesterday, San Francisco voters recalled county prosecutor Chesa Boudin in the wake of an increase in violence, shoplifting and drug crime. In his concession speech, Boudin was unabashed in his support for a jail-free society.
Vermont’s most prominent “no jail” prosecutor is Chittenden County’s Sarah George. Cash bail is racist, she wrote in an op-ed published by the ACLU-VT. She resists jailing even violent offenders after their arrest, preferring to return them to the street where, she says, they can access mental health and substance abuse programs.
Even before the Boudin recall sent shockwaves of concern through the ranks of progressive prosecutors, the ACLU of Vermont was sounding the alert. “Vermont’s recent progress in criminal law reform and demands for police accountability now faces a backlash from defenders of the status quo,” the ACLU said in its May 18 press release announcing its new program, “Your Vote – Your Prosecutor.” The program will “inform voters about the powerful, yet often unseen role of state’s attorneys in Vermont’s criminal legal system, and the impacts of their decisions in the lives of countless Vermonters.”
On August 9, Chittenden County’s Democratic primary voters will decide if – like San Francisco – they’ve had enough of the greater Burlington area’s growing number of shootings, shoplifting, and drug crime. George will face a challenge from Williston lawyer Ted Kenney, who says he’ll take a tougher stance on pre-trial incarceration than George.
According to a report last month in VermontBiz.com, Kenney believes Chittenden County can have criminal justice reform and safe streets. “The criminal justice system needs reform to remove disparities based on race and poverty, but we don’t have to choose between safe streets and reform, or between compassion and fairness…..We can have all of those things, but we can’t have any one of them without the others.”
Sarah has served as the State’s Attorney for Chittenden County since January 2017 after Governor Phil Scott appointed her to the position.
She has faced stringent criticism for her policy of not jailing some violent crime suspects, in favor of releasing them pending trial. Kenney criticized George for not seeking conditions of release for violent crime suspects, and referring all youthful offenders to juvenile court, according to VBM.
There will be two other county primaries for state’s attorney.
In Addison County, Lincoln native and Montpelier resident Tim Lueders-Dumont, now the Washington County deputy state’s attorney and the son of two Middlebury-area public defenders, will challenge local criminal defense lawyer Eva Vekos.
In Washington County, Michelle Donnelly of Barre City and Bridget Grace of Fayston will seek to replace Rory Thibault, who is running for attorney general.
In the general election, Franklin County will see a race between Democrat John Lavoie of St. Albans and Republican Zach Weight. At present, there are no other contested races for state’s attorney. Incumbents Vince Illuzzi (Essex), Jennifer Barrett (Orleans), Doug DiSabito (Grand Isle), and Todd Shove (Lamoille) are seeking re-election uncontested.

Going back to the dawn of civilization, no society could organize itself for the benefit of all unless there was first and foremost a credible system of sanctioning those who prey upon others. In the present day, this is called the “criminal justice system” and is a concept that is being inexplicably dismantled by progressives, leftists and Soros-backed prosecutors as part of the current “race hysteria”. They are literally attacking the very foundation of civilized society to bring about their definition of “equity”, and it is the most vulnerable members of the population who have the most to lose. Sarah George MUST GO.
Wow. EXCELLENT reply in every respect. As I always do, may I strongly suggest that you send this succinct, powerful grouping of four sentences to a “news” paper such as VT Digger as a Letter To The Editor – and if they do not initially publish (which they won’t), please contact their publisher(s), editor(s), owner(s) and/or whatever it takes until they eventually do print your words in compliance with your freedom of speech and, their “equity”.
Please let us know when it will appear, great writing!
This came out yesterday:
It clearly shows Burlington Vermont has one of the Soros influence progressive prosecutors:

She is absolutely linked to his network of ngos specifically the tides foundation and fair and just prosecution.
This is why it is impotent to change the makeup of the legislature. The problem could be solved easily by writing laws that eliminate out of state money in our LOCAL elections. Why should money from Soros or Zuckerberg our any out of state entity be allowed to buy our local elections? People have been asleep way too long and now we are living the results of apathy.
Sarah George MUST GO…….and we need people with an ounce or more of common sense…..
Prosecutors should prosecute!! They are not Social Workers or little old ladies that want to help criminals lead a productive life. Their job is to fill the jails and prisons with criminals.
