Welch calls for Menendez resignation, praises IRS expansion

U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, D-VT, has made headlines twice this week. Last night he joined a growing list of Democratic senators calling on a New Jersey Democratic senator charged with corruption, to resign. Earlier, he issued an enthusiastic endorsement of the expansion of the Internal Revenue Service.

Sen. Peter Welch

As reported in today’s Journal-Opinion newsletter, Welch he called on his colleague Sen. Bob Menendez, D-NJ, to resign in a terse statement issued last night:

“Senator Menendez is entitled to the presumption of innocence. But the people of New Jersey and the United States Senate are entitled to an effective Senator. The shocking and specific allegations against Senator Menendez have wholly compromised his capacity to be that effective Senator.

“I encourage Senator Menendez to resign.”

Welch becomes one of three Senate Democrats to join a growing chorus, according to NBC News. Menendez and his wife face federal corruption charges for their ties to Egyptian businessmen.

The indictment alleges some pretty brazen stuff. Federal agents searched the Menendez home in June 2022 when they found:

“Over $480,000 in cash—much of it stuffed into envelopes and hidden in clothing, closets, and a safe—was discovered in the home, along with over $70,000 in NADINE MENENDEZ’s safe deposit box. Some of the envelopes contained the fingerprints and/or DNA of [federal criminal defendant Fred] DAIBES or his driver.”

Menendez allegedly promised to use his influence to disrupt state and federal criminal investigations of the businessmen. He is also a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which exercises some authority over the distribution of foreign aid to Egypt.

Welch cheerleading for expanded IRS – In a September 24 press release, Welch also cheered the addition of 1,000 new IRS customer service workers to increase phone call response time and ensure that everyone pays ‘their fair share.’

“For far too long, the IRS has lacked the resources to make sure corporations and the ultra-wealthy are paying their fair share of taxes,” Welch said. “But thanks to funding Democrats passed as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, that’s going to change. The IRS now has more tools to monitor for potential tax evasion and cheating. The agency has already recovered $38 million from tax evasion, and expects to recover more than $100 billion on behalf of taxpayers over the next ten years. The stronger enforcement from the IRS means more money for the federal programs that Vermonters benefit from.”

  1. Meanwhile Welch is guilty of insider trading for most of his political career in the US House and Senate. What a total hypocrite.

  2. It is good to see that welch was given a script and some exposure, by his boss Chucky Schumer.
Always a ‘good boy’ he will play the role assigned and await the grift promised him.

I am always amazed that Vermont lacks real representation in our federal legislative branch. And that our liberal friends cheer and rave about all the good works done by these irrelevant three political hacks.
Washington DC’s ‘taxation without representation’ license plate motto should be adopted by our DMV for use in Vermont.

  3. If there ever was a Statist made of George Orwell’s 1984, it’s Peter Welch. Vermonters are the most foolish voters in the Republic. Always conned by all the rhetoric and empty promises while Statist like Welch pickpocket their liberties while enriching their own status. Welch has no shame.

  4. Can’t argue with more people manning the phones. Last year I was on hold with IRS long enough to make a one hour trip to the hardware store and still waited another half hour when I got back.

As for petty thief Menendez, he worked hard for all that cash he hoarded and took a lot of risk. Michelle O just got paid $700,000 to give a one hour speech on DEI in Germany. He goes to jail, she’s probably the next president.

  5. Welch doesn’t represent Vermonters. He’ll use the remainder of his term to garner as many ‘grifts’ as he can for retirement. Hopefully, he’ll choose to retire in another state…

  6. Welch touts money found by IRS already. How much of that compares to what was fraudulently taken from the so called Covid Relief Funds that our fearless leaders gave out? For the taxpayers to make up?

  7. Remember that time that Republicans asked George Santos to resign after he was charged with fraud? Oh yeah that’s right.

    • I’m confused, how many gold ingots and unmarked cash in excess of, what, $450k did santos have?

    • January 11, 2023

NEW YORK (AP) — State and local Republican leaders in New York on Wednesday called for the immediate resignation of their new GOP congressman George Santos,…

      Yes. I remember it well.

  8. Of course those 1000 IRS employees are only going to concentrate their efforts on the Ultra-wealthy (whoever Peters seems to think they are but can never divulge). And, of course, their efforts will result in “some number” of tax money TEN YEARS into the future to be spent on UNSPECIFIED/IMAGINED programs we dont want!!

  9. Unfortunately, he missed the boat on asking for Bernie’s resignation unless this is just a practice run.

    We can dream can’t we?

  10. Panic in the District of Corruption. No matter what the Dem/Progs/Rinos do now, the stink of The Biden is as strong as skunk spray and nearly as impossible to wash out – similar to the blood stains their cloaks and money. Menendez is only a sacrifice they are willing to throw under the bus because they are losing control of their “democracy.” Fraud has a limited shelf life and their time is running out. They know it and the desperation and lunacy of their words and actions is proof their end is drawing near.

  11. noun
    A person given to hypocrisy.

One who assumes a false appearance; one who feigns to be what he is not, or to feel or believe what he does not actually feel or believe; especially, a false pretender to virtue or piety.

Synonyms Dissembler, Hypocrite (see dissembler); Pharisee, formalist, cheat

  12. Gold Bar Bob wasn’t playing THEIR game !! He was holding up the F-16’s for Ukraine. Shifty Watermelon head Schiff would love to have his position for that committee that Bob heads!
Does anyone really think Welch got elected to that position ?
