I was raised in a household where my father was a long term, respected, volunteer, fire capt. In a time where the local dept. had a huge sense of pride. Marching in dress uniforms at the Memorial day parade, hosting a fantastic, community BBQ, and sponsoring a traveling circus most summers to raise funds. He detailed how there was a waiting list become a volunteer. That no one could enter the dept if “black balled.” How that policy assured no matter who you were responding with, you could count on that person to watch your back. A position at one time I aspired to. Fast forward. Today, departments are staffed with mentally deficient, fat, lazy, slugs. Seldom is a home structure saved. The solution to staffing is restoring the caliber of members.
