Video: Mourning fallen Rutland police officer

Funeral services for Rutland Police Officer Jessica Ebbighausen were held Tuesday at University Pavilion, Vermont State University–Castleton Campus, in Castleton.

Ebbighausen, 19, of Ira came from a police family and had wanted to serve as police officer since middle school.

The chain of events on Friday, July 7 that led to Officer Ebbighausen’s death began at 2:35 p.m. with a call to police that a man named Tate Rheaume, 20, was attempting a break-in at a residence on East Washington Street.

Rutland police units began responding to the scene. One of the other police cruisers in pursuit was driven by Officer Ebbighausen, with a supervising full-time officer in the passenger seat.

Rheaume crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes and collided with Officer Ebbighausen’s cruiser.

  1. This is such a tragic and unnecessary loss. So young and committed to service and community. Very sad to read this.
